However with the coming recession/depression it seems likely that the field will be severely affected and jobs will start to be cut. plus from people i've talked to in the business field working in the insurance industry is a joke. Job offers a guaranteed 35k with commission and renewals which should be around 45k for the year. Your thoughts? |

People may cut life insurance, but that is a minor part of your job since most companies offer life insurance for pennies.
And annuities are fading fast since people are learning how to invest wisely in bonds and cd's. /

You have a great opportunity here. The need for the product is never going to evaporate, and it cannot be outsourced to a foreign country. Yes, it is a competitive field, but as you progress, and provide competent advice and service on a competitive basis, you will find that your competition will diminish. If you like helping people, you have here an opportunity to do just that, and get paid for it. |

Why would the insurance industry be a joke? If you feel it's a joke then you clearly don't see any value in what insurance does and you will not do well in this industry. Pesimists do not succeed in sales. And those that you talked to are obviously not successful people...anyone that hates what they do or sucks at what they do, says their job sucks or it's a joke.
Home/auto insurance is something that people have to have...which means you are gauranteed business!
Insurance has nothing to do with a recession. Car accidents and house fires happen whether there's a recession or not. Same goes for all other types of life and health insurance...cancer and death don't say "Oh, we'll wait for 6 months for you until the recessions over" Life happens whether you're ready or not. Plus, think about it...if you are doing very well and have lots of money invested and your house burns down: You cash in investments and build a new one. OR You are in a recession, you might be losing your job, and your investments are worth 1/3 of what they were. Where are you going to get the money from to rebuild that house? During times of recession, insurance is more important than any other time...if you've got a million dollars and you need to spend $100,000 you're not starving, but if you've got $100,000 and you need to spend $100,000, you're screwed! |

Why would selling auto and homeowners insurance....something that people HAVE to have....be a joke? Selling cars might be a tough gig, or selling high-end luxury items might not be lucrative this year, but selling something that is mandatory is a no brainer. |
