The problem with health insurance in the U.S. is that lots of people (including me) don't HAVE any. It's extremely expensive for many people if they don't work for someone who offers it as a group policy, if indeed it is available at all. With the high costs of medical treatment, someone like me who doesn't have insurance doesn't GET treatment unless it's really a serious problem, as opposed to treating something when it's still minor and much easier and less expensive to treat. |

My understanding is that you have to pay and a high proportion of what you pay goes to insurance companies, salesmen, advertising budgets and so on rather than to actually providing the health care. The total cost per person of health care in the US is the highest in the world.
If you need to claim the insurers, like most corporations, will look for reasons not to pay out. If you are not covered by insurance and cannot pay, health care in the US is often described as being comparable to the 3rd world. |
