Is health insurance something really necessary to have?
So I just turned 18 yesterday and from what I can recall I haven't had health insurance in about 8 years, or when my father was last alive. He took care of everything so now I've realized that if I wanna go to the dentist and have generally good health I need to have health insurance, but is it really really necessary? I haven't been to a doctors office or ever had a severe medical ailment, but so far I've had great luck (knock on wood). Anytime I've been severely sick, flu/ear infection/etc I've gone to the clinic and had to pay 100 to 200 dollars each time so where should I start looking? I live in the state of Texas. I have very low income, just barely to sustain living in this apartment on my own with help of the government, but I've been very lucky. I have life insurance which I think is ironic, but what should I do? Where should I start, who should I talk to?

Well ... here's the thing ...

Let's say; gosh forbid you get into a major accident ... need surgery, few mights stay in the hospital ... maybe even rehab/physical therapy ... it could cost upwards for $100,000 ... and you would be 18 years old, with $ 100,000 debt to pay off.

If you have a medical insurance plan ... even if it's one of those crazy high deductible plans ... say with a $ 4000.00 dollar deductible ... at least there is a cap to what your max exposure would be.

4 grand is allot easier to pay off the 100k ...

also when you are insured you are gettting the benefit of contracted rates with the doctors and hospitals ...

Anywho ... i would strongly suggest at the very least getting a high deductible plan ...

GOOD LUCK !!!

first, you should collect some resource by searching the relevant keyword in search engine,if you got good luck there ,then your problem solved.however,if you are not able to find the ideal answer by doing that, here http://www.HealthInsuranceIdeas.info/free-online-health-insurance.htm is the resource i recommend.

Texas medicaid is where you start. You will be eligible until you turn 19. After that, to have the coverage, you would have to have children, be pregnant or meet the federal guidelines for disability. The only other option is to find an employer that offers health care. You will probably have to pay a portion of the premium and this cost depends on the plan, it's coverage and how much the employers pays toward the monthly premium. Since you are young and have no chronic illnesses, you might be able to get an individual policy. Find a local agent or broker in your area to research the plans available and the costs to you.

Yes, it's necessary. You're going to get sick, it's just a matter of time. People fight for health insurance because it's so important. Don't ask yourself if it's necessary, but how to get it. If you have low income, then I assume that u can get it for free or low price. At least that's how it is in massachusetts. Check government websites, email, and call them. Do your best to get health insurance. Worrying about this is nothing compared to worrying about not having it when you're in trouble. Good luck.

Statistically, since you are healthy you probably will pay more for premiums than for healthcare you incur. HOWEVER, insurance provides a safety net against risk.

As an example, if you got cancer you would be facing huge bills that you could not pay. You would be facing bankruptcy and you would become unisurable. Once you have a medical condition you can not apply for coverage without restrictions. You could be turned down or face higher premiums.

My suggestion is to look at a high deductible plan or an HSA that will cover a catastrophe and will keep your premiums low.

Health Insurance is more important than life insurance. Look into the Medicaid answer, but in general terms health insurance is absolutely necessary.
