Is it important to take photos of insurable items?
I recently took photos of some of the stuff in the apartment that I want to insure. I'm also trying to estimate how much we should be insuring our apartment for. I took pictures of rare books, art, computer equipment, but I'm wondering if I should include clothing, furniture, etc? Does any of this matter to the insurance co. in the event of a claim?
Additional Details
Thanks all! I will definitely take more pictures and a video, and I'll upload that somewhere on my web server.

Yes. Insurance companies have standard values for each room based on information you have given them. If your value of those rooms is larger than theirs you must be able to document your value. With the cost of a memory chip so cheap it is worth while to photograph anything of value you have. If you are every burglarized it also could make the difference if the police are able to recover your property. You can skip things of nominal value like everyday clothes, kitchen items. But furniture, a wall of books (not individual unless they are rare) should be saved. The photos should be kept with wills and other valuable papers, outside the home.

Taking photographs (or even a video) of your items is an excellent thing to do! It will make your claims process go so much more smoothly.

One thing to remember - store the photos (or video) off site. It won't do a lot of good if the photos of your items are damaged in the loss.

Dunno, but make sure your pictures are not stored at the same location the other things are :) Be sure to document serial numbers, dates purchase, purchase or appraised price, etc.

my hubby recently went around and took pics of almost everything in the house
i thought it was overboard, but he thinks it's important to keep these things
that way if something does go wrong, we have proof

i think it's worth looking into

Sure it does. Come claim time, you're going to have to prove value AND condition, AND posession.

But if you have a lot of collectables/fine art, you probably should insure them seperately. Have a sit down with your agent about it.

Unless you have every receipt for everything you have ever bought, you need pictures or video of everything. Insurance will only cover what you can prove you owned. My friend had his house broke into and the insurance didn't want to cover anything he did have a receipt for. He didn't have pics either. I called my insurance company to avoid this problem and they told me about the pics, video or receipts. They also recommend storing the pics and or video some where other than your house in case of a fire.
