Is it legal for an insurance company to receive general credit information without my permission?

Your insurance company must make you verbally aware or let you know that you are signing something that lets them pull your credit information. They can not order any of that information on their own free will without letting you know first.

We recently implemented the credit based insurance score with my company for homeowners policies. There has been people fired from ordering reports without verbally telling a client or sending a written statement that it would be done.

Please make someone aware of this. That is your private information. Your best bet would be to call the Department of Insurance in your state.

It is in the fine print on your application. If you sign the application, you are giving your permission. Some companies ask you to sign an addition form, some just get your verbal permission - your agent will ask you before you get a quote. Also, it is what is known as a "soft" hit on your credit - the same as the "pre-approved" credit cards. It will not affect your score. If you are concerned about it, you can call one of the credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian, can't think of the 3rd offhand) and have a freeze put on your credit, (as far as I know you only have to call one & they will call the other 2) that way, you have to call to allow each company to look at your credit. I hope this helps.

I can also receive general credit information without your permission. I can do anything. An insurance company can also do various thing. You can not stop all.

This is highly dependent on what state you live in. If its California then I believe 3 top officials will be convicted and sentenced to death.

Also, i'm not sure if you're referring to your current insurance carrier or if you are just shopping for quotes. Much of the general credit information is stored in databases like Choicepoint. So retrieval of info by insurance companies does not constitute a hit on your credit reports, or if it does its a soft hit that does not affect your credit rating.

In all honesty, it is to your benefit to allow them to look at that data. Without it you get charged base rate. Even someone with collections and bankruptcies get a slight discount off of base rate.

In certain cases if necessary you have to provide your credit information:Anyhow without your knowledge how it is possible to get the credit inforamtion about you??

I would assume so, since we as consumers are bombarded with "pre-screened/pre-approved" credit offers from companies that look at our general credit info. It isn't until we accept these offers that we allow these companies, insurance included, to look in detail into our credit reports.

They can't receive it, without your giving them the information they need to pull it - you need to give your date of birth, address, social security number, and name. And if you signed the back of an application - just about EVERY application I've ever seen has a phrase that gives permission for the insurance company to investigate you should they wish.

So if you signed ANYTHING, you gave them permission. They probably told you something like, "rates are determined by a variety of factors including credit scores", informing you of it when they asked for your ss#. Most of the time clients don't listen.

Insurance credit scoring & what is on your credit are 2 different things. When a company looks at "your credit" they do not see
who you owe, what you owe, and any of your accounts. It will not refect if you pay your bills on time. However, they need to advise you they are doing an insurance check

no its not legal please take some action on them cos they doesnt have any right to get into our credit information....
