Is it legal for my health insurance agency to keep track of my gynological visits?
I have never had an abnormal gynological test (I have been happily married 15 years) which means that I only need a pap test every 3 or so years now. I just received a letter from Medical Mutual stating it has been two years since my last pap test and to please schedule my appointment. YUK! They keep track of that? It is signed by some nurse I have never met who obviously reviewed my file---I feel so VIOLATED! How is that legal? I thought there was some law against keeping records of healthy people--what do they want to do next ----accompany me in the office to make sure I go? I would immediately switch health care providers but I am stuck with this company through work.

With increased emphasis on wellness, it is only natural, and becoming expected that our insurance carriers will remind us about preventive medical visits. 70% of all claims paid are for illnesses that are preventable, or as a result of lifestyle choices.

For every dollar spent on preventive services, the claims savings for corrective procedures is about $8. Not to mention the savings in discomfort, loss of life, or recovery.

They are not trying to invade your privacy, merely making sure that you take care of any preventive examination that you are entitled to.

Of course it is legal. There is no such law. The letter was private and addressed to you; not broadcast on CNN.

Of course they keep track of your gynecological visits - they are billed on an itemized claim form, just like any other medical procedure you have.

If you receive a service at a medical provider, your insurance company is billed a claim form containing procedure codes for everything you had done that day. That's how doctors and hospitals get reimbursed for your service.

Also...it wouldn't do you any good to switch health care insurers. You'd likely receive the same type of reminders from any of the other major health insurers in Ohio (or in most other states, for that matter).

Your insurance company is entitled to receive the information about you, because they are paying for your services. Unfortunately, if you do not wish for an insurance company to have information on what services you do/don't have done, your only option is to pay cash out of your own pocket for all of your medical services. Otherwise, if you expect someone else to foot the bill, then you have to accept the fact that they are going to be entitled to some information also.

P.S. No nurse would have looked at your file - there would have been a report run of females who hadn't had a Pap test billed within the time frame in question, and then the standard form letter would go out.

They are just trying to remind you. Yes, the do keep records of every visit and what the codes were because they paid part of the bill. My insurance called to remind me I hadn't had my mammogram this year. It was already scheduled. There is nothing wrong with a company informing you of a benefit they pay for. In fact, some people might not realize that benefit was available. They remind you so their risk of having to pay out for cervical cancer goes way down when you have regular exams.

How often should I have a Pap smear?
You should have your first Pap smear when you start having sex or by age 18.

Continue having a Pap smear once a year until you've had at least 3 normal ones. After this, you should have a Pap smear at least every 3 years, unless your doctor thinks you need them more often. Keep having Pap smears throughout your life, even after you've gone through menopause.

Certain things put you at higher risk of cervical cancer. Your doctor will consider these when recommending how often you should have a Pap smear.

If you're older than 65, talk with your doctor about how often you need a Pap smear. If you've been having Pap smears regularly and they've been normal, you may not need to keep having them. from: http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/women/reproductive/gynecologic/138.html#ArticleParsysMiddleColumn0006------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've never heard of a company being able to make someone have a particular examination to keep coverage. Either ignore the letter or call them and give them the information.

~~Paying for your health is their responsibility. They are actually doing you a favor by keeping track of necessary preventative testing, and this one is important.

Health insurance is part of your medical care. Don't feel violated about it. This is actually showing a great sign of your insurance looking out for your best health. Mine does it also, and honestly I am glad, time gets away from me and I am not good at staying on top of preventative care visits.

The people in the insurance companies who have access to personal medical information about you are either doctors or nurses. Your privacy is always confidential.~~

First, they aren't an agency, they are the company. And yes, they do track it, for "wellness" purposes.

I doubt a nurse went through your file. Most likely, they typed in for the computer to give a report of everyone who's had a pap (the testing gets coded in), XYZ months ago, and your name was spit out on the list, with probably thousands of other names.

Keeping records of healthy people?? You have your insurance through this company. They keep a record of when you go to a doctor and pay the bill because it came through with your policy number on it.
The reminder was simply to help keep you a HEALTHY person. It is cheaper for them to keep you healthy then to have you skip test and routine exams and get sick.
Chill out.
