Is it possible for me to insure my grandmother without her knowledge?
she is elderly and when she passes I know that my family will look to me for the funeral arrangements. The rest of my family are not financially ready for a monetry emergency.

If you are certain that you will be the person that will pick up the financial arrangements for her final arrangements and you are okay with that let me suggest that you and your grandmother talk about the situation and determine what type of arrangements she would like.

Once you have her talking about such issues find out if she would be willing to go with you to a funeral home of her choice and make some arrangements on a pre-need basis with that establishment.

That way you can be assured of giving your grandmother exactly what she wants in the way of a funeral and burial and you can start paying on a set and determined amount NOW rather than going into significant debt at her passing.

Just make sure that the establishment you choose has a good reputation and has been in business for awhile and routinely does pre-need accounts.

Possible? Yes. Legal? No Not anywhere!
Do not try it or you may find that even if you do somehow sneak a policy through that the insurance company will not pay the claim. They can contest all claims within the first 2 years after issue. The situation you describe falls under the insurance fraud laws. You don't want to go there. If your grandmother needs to be insured, you need to try to get her to apply herself with her being owner of the policy AND the one that is to pay premiums. Once the policy is issued, the company will pay no attention to who actually pays the premiums. Never try to insure anyone without their knowledge. I've been in court and read many cases involving this.

She has to sign the application. Sorry.

No, you need her consent.

If it makes you feel any better, you can't get "odds" from the insurance company when you have one foot in the grave - the insurance is going to cost as much - or more - than the funeral. So when you're talking an elderly person, you're best off saving your money.

Remember, the insurance company is in business to make money. And the odds (premium vs. payout) are ALWAYS going to be in their favor.

No. You do not have an insurable interest in your grandmother. It is possible to purchase insurance, but she will probably have to submit to a health exam and give you permission to own it. You can't go behind her back. You will have to talk to her.
In addition to the funeral expenses, if she wishes to be buried, a burial plot can cost a thousand to two thousand dollars, and opening and closing a grave can be another thousand. Would she want a headstone? That can cost another thousand. That is in addition to the funeral arrangements- casket, embalming, funeral service, picking up the body from the hospital or home, etc. Perhaps she has some ideas about what she wants to do. Maybe she wants to be cremated ( that's cheaper) and her ashes spread somewhere she loves. Perhaps she wants to donate her body to science. You really need to talk to her, and figure it out together. Most funeral homes have planning guides, which they give out for free. Many funeral directors and cemeteries actually have salespeople who will come out to your house and talk to you and your G-Ma. They can offer prepayment plans that you can pay over time. Whatever you
do, you need to engage your G-Ma in the discussion. If she has a medical problem or isn't capable of making these decisions or doesn't want to face the fact that she is older and is approaching the end of her life, you need to get a power of attorney from her so you can work these things out on her behalf.

Yes. That's smart but you may be paying a very high premium for life insurance at her age. Make sure you shop around and ask lots of questions. Don't automatically trust life insurance sales people. They are tough.
