It should be safe. They may be using this to look at your credit. That sometimes helps determines the risk and the final rate. |

Some insurance companies use your SSN to run credit checks to see if you qualify for a certain program(payment plan) they offer. In some States insurance companies cannot use credit scores to determine rates.
You can ask to be given a quote first and if you find that quote to your liking, you may give them your SSN to make sure you qualify. Safer than giving it to every company your getting a quote from. |

Yes, as long as you're sure they are an agent or company. Unless you're in California, you HAVE to give your SS & DOB in order to get an insurance quote - the other states ALL use credit scores for rate determination and eligiblity. |

They use your SSN to determine your credit worthiness. The last I knew the only carrier who did not do a credit check was American Family Insurance. You may have to pay a slightly higher rate if you did have good credit but decided not to go with a carrier who did a credit check. On the other hand if you have bad credit then you just MIGHT get a better rate if you go with American Family Insurance because they did not do a credit check.
I am not sure if AMFAM changed their policies since but it just might be worth looking into.

you don't have to give it yoiu can give other ID for a quote but your SSN will be most accurate so if you have good credit and no accidents giving SSN will get you lowest cost insurance if you do not provide it to them you will still get insurance will just have to pay more. |

I think so. They need to check your credit to find out if you can pay monthly or need to make one big payment if you have a problem paying bills. |

insurance company will use you ssn for verify information, specifically you're driving and vehicular history, to better assess your quote. if you feel uncomfortable with it, don't give it away and look for other sites to give you a quote without a ssn submission. |
