Nope--if you want them on a plan through your employer then yes-you'll probably have to have them under your own plan.
But you could purchase a plan for just the children directly through the insurance company. |

Assuming you're talking about health insurance, no, the parents do NOT have to be insured. You can get individual health insurance policies for each child.
Usually, though, if it's going to cost you $200 a kid, depending on how many kids you have, a family plan that ALSO includes the adults is cheaper than insuring everyone seperately. |

If it is life insurance, the parents do not have to be insured. Insurance on kids is great if you get guaranteed renewals. That way, even if their health becomes a problem they can get insurance at a reasonable rate. If you use a whole life or universal life product, you can use it as a means to finance a college education without a big tax liability on the gains. |

Assuming you are talking about life / critical illness (trauma), in Australia it depends upon the age of the kids. The minimum age to be a policy owner is usually 16.
If under the age of 16 the policy owner must be either a parent or a legal guardian and the child cover is a rider to a policy on that person's life. Once the child turns 18 or 21 (it depends on the life company), the child cover policy is converted into a term life policy on the life of the child. This is great especially if the child has developed a health issue that would otherwise render them unable to be insured. |
