If you go to the ER, they have to treat you, but if you don't have insurance you have to pay the full amount for the visit which can get very pricy. If you have insurance then you just pay a co-pay which is pretty cheap. Like $15-$45. |

It is illegal for emergency services to refuse treatment. Many states offer insurance coverage for poor people, colleges offer health insurance to students (for some universities the insurance is a requirement to attend), and many Americans are just billed and pay cash.

no. they are required by law to assess and treat all life threatening emergency's, and treat them until they are out of danger. medicaid will cover the bill if they are poor enough, or medicare will if they are disabled or retired. unfortunately, if you have no insurance, 100% of the bill is yours (sometimes you can get the hospital to discount it) and a lot of times you get transferred out as soon as its safe for you., but the hospital cannot refuse life saving treatment. many large cites have "county" hospitals (like where i work) that subsidizes the treatment of the uninsured, and have very generous repayment terms. there is a lot of patient "transfers" that goes on, where for profit hospitals will transfer patients county ones, to continue treatment when the emergency is over. |

emergency rooms in public hospitals are reuired by law to treat critically injured people regardless of thier ability to pay. This is why universl coverage is needed so much in this country. |

Medicare is a government handout insurance program for elderly, once they are eligible for social security. You don't get it "automatically", you have to apply for it. Medicaid is a government handout insurance program for very low income people. You also have to apply for that.
Hospitals in the US are NOT allowed to turn away people in urgent care situations. Note, that does NOT include routine office visits, colds, etc.
Your auto policy DOES have an option for "medical payments". If you have no health insurance, you should increase your medical payments coverage. |
