Is life insurance with cashback just a gimmick?
My husband has taken one out and I feel that we could get basic life cover for a lot cheaper and invest our own "cashback" in our own way. Am I right to think this?

Yes, you are right. They're investing his money, keeping the procedes, and returning the principal. He's effectively giving them an interest free loan.

It costs a LOT more than term life, because they buy term life with part of it . .. invest the rest.

Yes, you are definitely thinking better on this. You should convince him to get term life and invest the difference in what it will cost you in something easy to manage with a high return... try www.ing.com. Their Orange Savings account (which can be managed entirely online) earn you 5%APY. Can't beat it!

It's most appropriate for people with low financial discipline. I wouldn't exactly call it a gimmick, but its practical use is limited.

Make sure you compare the after-tax rate of return on any alternative investment you are considering when you are thinking about doing this on your own. If you don't know how, either keep the ROP plan or seek the help of a financial advisor.

It's not a gimmick, but you may be able to obtain better returns elsewhere.

You can calculate the rate of return of the ROP - Return of Premium policy to a non-ROP. Most of the times the rate has not been high enough to justify the extra cash outlay, but I have seen a few that made sense.

Some people use it as a forced savings, or as part of a business buy-sell agreement

My company happens to agree with you. See below for a couple of sites regarding whole life policies. Part of the problem is that there can be tax consequences for taking out the cash build up as a loan. Initially, there will be no taxes to be paid, except if the owner dies. If any of the loan exceeds the total premium paid to that point, any cash beyond that will be taxed.

Also, the face amount paid to beneficiaries is NOT taxed, but the insurance payment WILL be considered as part of the owners' estate. THIS is where tax planning needs to come into the picture.

Yes, you can do better investing on your own. Insurance and investments should be kept separate. And, if you have a proper retirement plan, the length of time for insurance should only be UNTIL you have saved enough for a retirement that does not touch principal.
