Is my insurance broker doing his job?
After some damage in my rented apartment, I called my broker (first time in 14 years) to make a claim. After a lot of talking, he says the insurer cannot help me. I contacted the insurer directly and they say they will do it. Why am I paying a broker who keeps me from getting my claims settled? Next time, I will go directly to an insurance company.

I have actually seen this happen first hand.

I'll tell you why, and then you fire your broker. You can fire the broker, and keep the same company, by just calling the company and asking them for a few names of alternative agents in your area, then just transferring your insurance to a different agent with a broker of record letter. The new agent would be happy to help you with that paperwork.

See, that broker gets paid commission for your policy. But he ALSO gets paid "contingencies" based on his claims. If, as a whole, for that company, the insurance company pays out less than 50% of what they took in, they're going to write him a big fat check for up to 10% of all the premiums he's written with them. So, I've actually seen, real, live, agents discouraging the filing of claims. And not in the best interest of the client (because I'll do that, you don't want to claim every paperclip you lose, the surcharges will KILL you), but in the interest of their commission overrides - called Profit Sharing.

This can be 1 of 2 things...

1) Your broker does not know what he is doing.

2) Your broker was trying to talk you out of filing a claim in order to not miss out on proft sharing from that carrier.

Either way, contact your state's insurance board and file a complaint.

Outside the box
Report him to the ins co and state ins board.....

In my opinion after think it carefully is, your broker only took the brokerage fee from your policy, didn't want to serve, not only you, maybe all their client, there is no reason for the broker not to serve the client the best, for 14years the broker must already know all the term and condition attach in your policy, so if they knew it, there will be no wrong answer for your claim, that's why in this case lets take a lesson from your experience not to buy insurance from someone you don't really know, but if you don't know one who works as broker, you can ask your friends or family for reference, especially one who have a clean case claim experience, so you can be more convenience and can put trust to that person.
and about to go to insurance company directly, my answer is, many people find it wasting time to buy insurance directly, and also don't know what to do, such as to fill all the form and papers.
Tku and good luck with another brokers.

miss out spoken
That broker is making easy money just to tell you something. Don't waste your money just do the work youself and that way you won't get any second hand information from a third party. Handle your business and invest that money you was throwing away to the broker.

You are not technically "paying a broker". You will not save any money by going direct vs. working with the broker, but call the company and make sure that the "agent of record" is changed so this broker doesn't get any renewal commissions.

I have had the same insurance policy for 15 years. it wasn't until I was on the phone with my insurance company about a claim I was informed my rates on very high and should re-apply. Infact they were double the current rate? I found out my broker was no longer working for the company? Nobody informed me! I took their advise and re-applied and guess what I was turned down. 15 years with the same policy and they turned me down...Advise....
