BELLE | Is my job being horrible or am I overreacting???? |
IMy family has never had health insurance. (3 kids) I was offered a job in Sept 07 and was told they would insure my family with very little payment on my part. I had to wait to get past the 3 months probabtion period and then it took them almost 2 more months to get my policy started.
Now, I have had y insurance 1 month and they informed me they will no longer pay for anyone but me (it is $1800 a month they say to insure my kids and husband)
I am crushed and sick about it. I have invested 6 months of my time and talent into this job with the exspectation of having health insurance and they are going to take it away with no compensation after 1 month.
I have been crying at work all day..................
I would not have taken this job if I had known I could not insure my family (my husband is self-employed and can not get affordable coverage)
What should I do???????????????? |

This sounds like a highly illegal practice by the employer.
Obviously the company is offering health insurance to all employees. Are they covering all other employees only and making employees foot the difference? If they are making this move now on you, I would think you would be hearing all employees cry at their desk about their newfound expenses.
They must treat all employees the same from a benefits standpoint. Otherwise they are discriminating. I would tell HR, or the manager, you want to know the company's practice on covering premiums for all other employees. If they say its just for you then I would just say politely no thanks, you pay it. I'm an employee like all others and you can't discriminate against me (then quickly run to an attorney to document the meeting in case you need it later for a wrongful termination suit).
I would possibly even question the $1800/month figure. Is that health only? Or does it include dental, life, etc? Is your family high risk from a health perspective?
That rate is phenomenal. I know, trust me, I know.

Sounds like they've pulled a "bait and switch". They lured you in with promises, and now that you're there, they've changed the ballpark. I would speak to someone in HR. If you can't get it resolved with some diplomacy, speak to the BBB or other regulatory authority. I would be upset also.
And by the way....voting democrat is NOT going to save the nation!!! All that will do is take more of our tax dollars and bring us closer to socialism. |

They must cover all employees the same. If they offer other employees family coverage, they MUST offer it to you. If they are discriminating, contact you state insurance commissioner's office.
If their offer to cover you and your family was in writing, contact your state's labor board. |

Ask for an explaination. Ask them why you were mislead. Ask them if this is a unilateral decision or is it applicable to you and you alone.
Start looking for another job. |

Do you have their promise in writing?
There's not much you can do other than speak to your manager and your manager's manager and tell them how you feel and that you need the insurance.
And start to look for a new job.
And next time you start a new job, if they don't sign you up for insurance on the first day, quit or demand an explanation. |

Tell your boss your situation, if he can't do nothing about then find a job that can cover your whole family. Paying that much money for insurance should over everyone. |
