Is renters insurance worth it?
considering getting rental insurance but is it worth the monthly payment? since i'm renting, i assume the owner has homeowners insurance, and wouldn't that cover us in case of emergency?

Getting renters insurance is an excellent idea. If you rent the building's owner does not carry insurance to cover your losses, only their own.

Your property, such as furniture, clothes, books, china, televisions, stereo equipment, etc if they are damaged by a covered loss. Covered losses include fire, theft, vandalism, explosion and several other types of losses that can happen where you live. Make sure you get replacement cost coverage so you can avoid depreciation!

Additionally, you will get liability coverage may also include liability protection, which covers damages as a result of unintentional bodily injury or property damage to another person. If necessary, a renters insurance policy may even pay for your legal defense in these circumstances.

Get a quote from your auto insurer (you may get a discount for having more than one type of insurance with them), and two or three other companies. I'd be sure to contact State Farm, Geico and Liberty Mutual. All three are very reputable.

Make sure all of the companies quote you for the same amounts of coverage, otherwise you're comparing apples to oranges.

Best of luck!

get it. if there's a fire, theft, natural disaster...your landlord is only liable for the building, not it's contents.

think of everything you'd need to replace in case of a fire-dishes,clothes,furniture...

get it!

it does not cover you in any way. Fire or theft will be a total loss. Yes the cost is worth it. Some policy's are as little as 12 monthly

Homeowners Insurance will not cover your contents. Renters insurance is worth it if you have anything of value or if you could not afford to replace all of your belongings in case there was a fire etc.

No, the home owners insurance only covers liability and the building.

Renters insurance covers you and your things. Some good policies cover things like temporary housing.

No way would I live without insurance, and it is usually relatively cheap.

But imagine, someone else causes a fire that affects your place, the fire department comes and puts out the fire, but all your stuff is still ruined from smoke & water. Without renters insurance you start over from scratch.

Think about what it would cost to replace every single item in your home. Every pair of underwear, every fork, every sponge.

Small price to pay to know I would at least have a temporary roof over my head, and a start to replacing the clothes for my back.

Yes, renters insurance is worth it. It is realitively inexpensive and your only protection to many potential loss situations. Be sure you use a reputable company and make your deductible as high as possible to keep your premiums low. Remember, you will probably only use this in case of a major loss.

It is a necessary evil

Chances are you will never need it BUT, in the rare case, like the apartment fires that took over last month in a town outside of Philadelphia, you just can't risk being without it.

Besides, it really doesn't cost much, generally covers you stuff where ever it may be and in multiple places (ie, storage facility, traveling etc), and it gives you peace of mind.

YES-it's not only worth it, it's not an option to go without it.

PS-generally the homeowner's insurance can not be counted on and generally requires that a special stipulation be added to their policy in order to cover your items. Do not count on this to cover your belongings!
