Kung | Is selling car and home insurance difficult? How much does the average person make? Which is a good company? |

Well, it's easy, if you can sell, and have a base of contacts to work from. People don't come to you, you have to go to them.
The average new agent washes out. 95% of agents wash out, not being able to sell even $1,000 worth. The average agent that doesn't wash out, makes $40K the first year, with 60 to 80 hour workweeks. One bright star in a thousand will make into six figures. |

insurance is a great field to get into (boring at times)
you need training and a license to be able to make some serious money
some direct writers like allstate have own training programs
i would suggest starting with one of them.... learn personal lines then learn commercial lines... so you can sell once you get a license and some self confidence...and you will be onyour way
good luck

It can be extremely difficult. We just recently started our business and right now we are thirty three thousand dollars in the hole. We signed on with a company that pays only commissions, but offers subsidy loans once an agent has converted to Career Status. I hear the first three years are the worst. After the first three an agent begins to have enough renewal commissions to pay some bills, but I would not recommend it to someone unless they are very tenacious.
Another warning. You may think that your family and friends that you have known for years will want to support your business, but often they will be the first ones to run away when you approach them. They may have been with their current insurer for many years and may resent you even asking. Some friends are even jealous and think your on easy street and will not even think about letting you look at their coverage. We have even had friends refer to us as retired. Easy street is not reality in the beginning.
We pay our own office rent, phone bills, internet, computer equipment, office supplies, and lead source fees.
Remember retention is key. Earnings at our company are 15% new business 10% renewals on autos. 20% new business on homes 15% renewals. It really takes a lot of policies for that to start to add up. Maybe in ten or fifteen years easy street will come along.
Good luck on whatever you decide |

To make a living, you'll need to write (and retain) 4-6 new households (cars & autos) per week, 50 weeks a year for the next 5 years. To do this, you'll need to speak with 100 people a week and quote 20-30 of them. The trick is marketing, do you have a ready market? How you going to talk that much?
To get a good company you need a good producers contract. Producers contracts are like sex in prison: what you want ,you don't get; what you get, you don't want.

My advise, unless you're an insurance geek, keep looking. |
