Is the landlord responsible if you have a electrical fire and you have no rental insurance in New Jersey?
The smoke detector's wiring caught fire. The firefighters said the whole electrical needs to be done.
Additional Details
In this sense I'm wondering if the landlord's insurance will cover the costs for temporary living. Unfortunately, I can't return for at least 10 weeks. Thank you.

Your rental agreement should tell you about it.

There is renters' insurance for about $25/mo that you can take to cover your computers, furniture, clothes, etc etc.

This is a really scarey situation. Can you sleep?

You should move. If the apartment is not habitable and you are needing temporary housing, then the insurance may cover that.

Your landlord needs to discuss this with you and assure you of your rights. It may be not fault of his, but the dwelling does need to to safe.

Good luck!

The landlord will not pay for your personal property losses, if that's what you mean.

Nope, the landlord is not on the hook.

He doesn't even have any insurance to cover YOUR stuff.

Sorry.

Of course not, you had the option to insure your belongings. They were not valuable enough to you to obtain insurance.

The landlord is not liable for your belongings.

JennyBoBenny
NO , you are responsible.

renters insurance covers your liability and personal assets. Their insurance will not cover it.

golferwhoworks
he is responsible for the fire but not your stuff that is why there is such a thing as renters insurance

Only if you can prove they were negligent. Was their a problem with the wiring? Did they do regular inspections? Who did the inspections, the landlord or a third party maintenance company? Did they know there was a problem with the wiring and failed to remedy? If they can prove they had no notice of the potential problem, be it actual or constructive, they will not be found liable. That is why you should have renters insurance.

acermill
The landlord's insurance will cover the landlord's building and property. YOUR insurance will cover your property. OOPS, no renter's insurance ? Then you are on your own.

Unless you carried renter's insurance, you will not be reimbursed for anything lost in the fire.

The smoke detector caused the fire? That's the definition of irony if you ask me. The landlord is not liable however you may have a case against the manufacturer.

Tom J
There is no correlation between the 2.
