Is the pool fence covered by home insurance?
My swimming pool fence is only 3 years old and it is now full of rust because I live close to the ocean. It is literally disintegrating. I have house and contents insurance and am wondering, do insurance companies cover this type of damage?

Nate W
That's a good question. How do insurance companies determine what is covered and what isn't?
First of all, insurance is for "sudden and accidental loss". If the loss could have been foreseen and therefore avoided, its usually not covered. It also can not be intentional. I.E. stain on the carpet not covered. Lightning strike is covered. Many people have difficulty understanding the difference between a warranty and insurance.

Secondly, most HO policies nowadays will cover any sudden and accidental loss, unless that type of peril was specifically excluded from the policy. I.E. most policies now exclude acts of terrorism.

So with that in mind, your policy will not replace your fence because it was not sudden and accidental. I highly recommend taking a closer look at your policy to see what else is excluded. If any of those exclusions make you nervous, call your insurance agent.

That is wear and tear, not damage. You need to replace it with a more durable fence.

Your fence is covered under the perils of the policy. There has to be a precise time that the loss happened. Because rust comes over time. It is considered maintenance and therefore would not be covered under your homeowners policy. Sorry. Talk to the people that installed it maybe they had a warranty. Good Luck

The fence itself IS covered under the peril "separate structures" of your homeowners policy, however, only under accident fire/hazard occurrences, not wear/tear issues.
If there is something that has rust, its because of wear/tear, where it can be prevented. This will unfortunately NOT be covered.

Sue
No sorry, that is considered wear & tear & no covered by insurance. There is a specific exclusion for rust, corrosion, etc in your policy.
