Today, unlike in the past, most salesperson's are merely clerks. They get paid a little more than minimum wage and do not know anything about their products. When salesperson's were on commission, they had to know what they were selling, how good it was, which one was better, which one was worse, and which one was a better value for your dollar. A perfect example of the difference is Sears. Sears used to have commission salesmen who knew everything in their departments. Now all you have are register islands and get "I think it is over there" or "what is that?".
The only place where your oxymoron exists I believe is on a used car lot. They want to sell as many junk cars as they can. The example I will use is a brand new Lincoln Navigator it costs about $55,000. A one year one you can get at an auction for around $28,000, but a used car lot will gladly sell it to you for $42,000.
I may be wrong but after I got out of the Air Force I had a lot of sales jobs. I was never a clerk. I believed in what I was selling, mainly because I am one of the few who believe in honesty. (You get fewer returns that way). |

When it comes to brokers it seems to be.
They pretend to be 'financial advisors' and the proceed to sell products that are NOT in the client's BEST interest although they pretend they do. They neglect to tell clients all the fees they pay and the impact of those fees over time. They don't tell the client that their returns would be MUCH better if they did their own investing.
They lie, manipulate and hide important facts. Yup, I'd say dishonest. |

The sad answer is that is can be. I used to be a district sales manager for a health company, and had over 300 agents in my territory. I would say that 80% of them were not worth a darn. They only cared about making money, and didn't really know the products and the laws that govern health insurance. That is why I went back to being a broker. My clients don't always like what I tell them, but I am always honest with them. That means I don't always get the sale on new biz. But, once I gain the trust of a client, I rarely lose their business. And I get a lot of referrals because I am like this. |
