Ccatz5 | Is there a big difference in the cost of health insurance in a small town vs. large city? |

I work in the auto insurance industry, so I can tell you that yes, living in a small town will make your premiums smaller. Why? because there's much less traffic in small cities than in larger ones, hence less accidents. |

Usually the metropolitan areas have higher rates. I wouldn't say the difference is that big, maybe 5 to 10%. But, there are even price differences between different large cities in one state. For example, Oklahoma City has higher rates than Tulsa does with all my carriers, both group and individual health insurance.
Health insurance companies file their rates with the state insurance department. Their actuaries determine the rates based on the cost of medical care in that particular area. So, I guess medical care in OKC is higher than the same care in Tulsa. |

All insurance pricing is based on "risk". That is, how likely is one customer to file a claim as compared with another customer. The greater the likelihood that you are to file a claim, the greater your premium. In health insurance, "risk" is defined as how likely are you to have medical problems that require the insurance company to put out great amounts of money, compared with another customer.
If you think about that, that means that if you live in a small town, and have a heart attack, you may have to be transported a long way, even life flighted, whereas a city person is usually minutes from a very effective trauma center. So, the simple answer to your question is.....yes, there probably is.....folks out in the woods pay more in most cases. |

The location isn't as important as age and health, for health insurance rating purposes. |

Yes, there can be a big difference. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.

All the things depend only on age basis. Younger people get less premium than older people. some other reasons such as obesity, surgery at younger age may also influence in the cost of premium. |
