Defunct | Is there a way to get cheaper health insurance that's not through your employeer? |
I pay $180 a month for health insurance and I think it's absurd. I'm a 24 year old guy and I bet 60 years olds pay just as much. |

You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process so that you understand what you are purchasing. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but there is so much more to this decision than price.
The first thing you need to determine is how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care. This ultimately determines the affordability of your health insurance plan.
If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage and you choose low deductibles and low copays your monthly premiums will be significant. Maybe that's why your employers plan is so expensive)
On the other hand because you are young, probably healthy and rarely use the health care system you are able to consider a plan that covers the major health catastrophe which will result in relatively low premiums. You can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.
Check with the agent that writes your home, renters or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health situation. If they don't handle health insurance they could refer you to a trusted colleague.
If you want to use the Internet use it to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage. One other thing make sure your new individual policy is in place before you cancel the coverage you currently have with your employer. |

You lose that bet. Feel free to paypal me money.
A 60 year old in perfect health, would be really lucky to get coverage at $700 a month.
You CAN get cheaper insurance - through a local agent. It usually involves cutting coverages and taking on large deductibles. |

$180.00 a month is NOT absurd. Get a clue. A private policy for a single guy would be about 8 times more... |

If your employer offers group health, I wouldn't shop around. Group health, in terms of coverage for the dollar, is almost always superior to individual health insurance.
Individual health insurance is also notorious for cherry-picking for what they will, and will not pay for. Your rates may be cheaper, but if you ever do get very ill, don't be surprised if you find you have a battle getting the carrier to cover the expenses if you have individual insurance.
And $180.00 a month for one is a bargain. Especially if your deductibles are low. |
