Is there a website that lists the types of health benefits that major U.S. employers have?
You can't ask this kind of question to the employer because it kills your chances of getting hired. I would like to find out what employers have health insurance that would cover gastric bypass surgery so I can focus submitting resumes to them.

The quick answer is no.

There is no one central repository of health benefits offered by employer.

You have an additional problem. For large employers, virtually none of them have to have any mandated benefits since any employer over 50 employees is allowed to opt out of state rules (which include mandating benefits like gastric bypass) because they then fall under the ERISA (Employee Income Retirement Security Act).

There are only two federally mandated benefits (maternity benefits for employers over 15 employees) and corrective mastectomy after breast cancer surgery.

Other than those two, ERISA plans don't have to cover anything they don't want to.

However, if you do have a large employer, usually they are quite proud of their benefits and would likely gladly tell you who their carrier is.

You could also probably anonymously call the HR benefits coordinator and just tell them you are a 'new' employee and you want to know if that benefit is covered.

you can request a benefits overview as part of the interview before you accept a job....many people do this.

This is a very delicate issue... Gastric bypass signals that you are seriously overweight.

While a company should not discriminate, in fact they often do.

If you go for an interview and are obviously overwieght, you may
lose before the race begins.

In many parts of the USA, there is a legal position and philosophy
called 'employment at will'. It means you can quit your job without
much of a problem, but more seriously it means that a company can fire you without much of a reason.

If it can be proved that the company fired you because you are a woman, or because you are of an ethic minority, or on religious grounds (Jew, or similar religious grounds), then you have a case.

Otherwise, you can be in caca profunda.

See if you can get your weight under control by other means, and then try for a good job. An employer who sees you aiming
at the health insurance plan will never hire you.

Search PPO and/or HMO Medical Organizations. You can find these organizations under Major Medical Health Insurance Plans. Print comparison plan charts starting with most comprehensive coverages.
Also call a reputiable employment agency in your area to see if they are familiar with companies you are considering.
Wouldn't hurt to inquire with the prospective companies you are considering as well.
Finally, if health insurance is your priority for employment you should consider the moral values you are demonstrating, do you want to start a corporate position on this precidence?
Your health is most important, why add stress of a job obligation, there are other options for uninsured individuals.

No, they don't - because it's one of those "liability" issues. If someone forgets to update the website, or if the plan changes, then they'd have a serious employee benefits liability exposure.
