It's called disability insurance. If you are sick or hurt for 30 days or more, it starts paying you a specified amount. The prices vary heavily depending on the company and your occupation history so work with an independent agent who can do some shopping for you.
If it's reasonable for you, don't buy a "total only" contract. The majority of claimants are not totally disabled. |

I think you want catastrophic illness and injury insurance. So, you pick up the day to day stuff, and the insurance kicks in for big ticket items. I believe the premiums will be smaller as the insurance company won't be paying for meds and routine Dr. visits.
You may also qualify for a health savings plan at work (or through a private company), where you put a small amount of your check away in case you need an emergency appendectomy or something. The tax breaks on HSAs are pretty good. I think you may be able to write it off your income, but don't quote me on that.
Also, if offered, sign up for long term disability, which is inexpensive and gives you a substantial check when you need it the most.
It's a good idea and definitely worth talking to an insurance agent about it. |

If you take out finance on most things these days, you're offered insurance. If you want separate insurance cover - most banks & Building Societies do this type of policy - its generally called Payment Protection Plan. Im sure you could get a good deal on the net. You can usualyl select how long you want the cover to be paid for - the longer you are covered for - the more expensive it is.
I know that Lloyds TSB and Britannia Building Society do these policies - if you already have any accounts with Britannia - remember that by taking out this policy, you will earn Loyalty Bonus points too!!!! |

Major Medical insurance typically covers this. There are usually NO office visit coverages and this type of policy is typically an indemnity policy; it pays you certain amounts when certain things happen. For example...if you are admitted, it will pay a set amount per day to you so that you can pay the costs. The more $$ you want per day, the higher the cost of the policy. |

There are three or four types of insurance.
Personal Accident and Sickness insurance will pay a fixed amount for each week you are off work due to accident/ sickness. Benefit periods are usually 52 weeks sickness and 104 weeks accident. In addition you can insure. Other than sums insured premiums depend on occupation. There is usually a 7, 14 or 28 day excess.
Permanent Health Insurance. Pays an amount if you are unable to work until you are a fixed age. Because payments can last for a long time this is more expensive. Typical excesses are 4,13,26,52 weeks and is often used in conjunction with personal accident/ sickness. Rates depend on age/ gender/ occupation and smoking habits.
Payment protection insurance - also know as Accident/ Sickness and Unemployment Insurance, mortgage protection, loan protection or income protection. Pays a monthly benefit if you are unable to work o are made unemployed. usually you have to be off work for 30 days and then you are paid from the first day. Rates may be age dependent but not usually occupation dependent but sums insured may be limited to mortgage payments or a low percentage of your income.
Critical illness - pays if you suffer a critical illness and survive. |
