Yes, Americans who have worked and had money taken out of thier pay checks/cheques for Social Security/Medicare, do have the benefit of receiving Medicare around the age of 65. You can also try to qualify for Medicaid, which is a state funded insurance for the indigent, just realize each state qualifying process differs.

I really cannot answer this question for countries outside the US either. However, in the US most people over 65 do qualify for medicare. Either they have worked and had benefits withdrawn the required amount, or their spouse has. Medicare does not cover everything, and many people opt to buy a medicare supplement or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These are both good choices for different people.
