The police can get that info for you. You should have been given it at the scene of the accident. If you sue the driver their insurance co. will take over the case. |

The person who hit your car is required by law to supply you with both the name of the company and the policy number.
If you filed a police report at the scene, see if they got it.
If the person who hit you won't supply it, he may not actually be insured, so you may have to take him to small claims court. |

Not legally, that's private information. However, many companies have "unique" policy numbers. Example: Royal Insurance (now out of business) started ALL their auto policies with PDA followed by 8 numbers. You can post the policy number, see if anyone recognizes the format.
Keep in mind, that their insurance company doesn't have to accept a claim report from YOU, you aren't the insured. If they accept the REPORT, they won't ACT on it until they have confirmed it with their policy holder. So just knowing the name of the company isn't necessarily going to help you out AT ALL.
Your best bet, IMO, is to put the claim in under YOUR policy - then your insurance company will track them down and "subrogate" to get damages back, including your deductible.
Your second best bet, is just sue the person in small claims court. |

Let your insurance company handle this for you. It will speed up the process and it's much less work for you. |

Try asking your insurance company to find out for you, even if you are not making a claim with them. They have to have some way to verify policies to charge in case of an accident caused by someone else or to check if someone had insurance when opening a new policy. My insurance company was able to locate someone for me just by using a partial plate I got after a hit and run. The police only wrote up a report and did nothing else. The insurance company had to do all of the work. |

Even if you do get a phone number, you'd have to have proof that they hit your car, or their admission that they did, before their insurance company would pay. |
