Accidents are one reason to be insured...the other has to do with getting insurance after you find out you need it. In other words, say you're not insured. You go to the clinic because you don't feel good. They find something seriously wrong with you, like cancer. You know to get treatment will be mega expensive....so you go to get insurance. You can then be denied coverage of any pre-existing condition that you did not previously have insurance for. It's called creditable coverage. They can say, "yes, we'll insure you, but we won't pay for your cancer treatments for six months because you weren't insured for cancer before."
I work in Employee Benefits....we help employers find the right insurance to offer their employees. We get asked about individual insurance quite a bit, too. If you don't go through an employer, try insurance.com to get started. Assurant/Fortis has decent plans, too. You claim to be healthy, but how do you know if you haven't gone to a doctor, which you're more likely to do if you don't have to pay full price. Definitely get insurance. Look for a higher deductible, but one that pays for office visits without having to meet that deductible first. Also, since you believe yourself to be healthy, the cheaper HMO plans would be better for you....HMO plans aren't generally as terrible as people think, IF you're healthy. The bad thing about HMOs is that they have what are referred to as gatekeepers...they are designed to tell you "no" to going to get your feet scraped and having acupuncture and the like. HMO means you have a pcp (primary care physician) and he refers you to other doctors if you need specialist, but, if you're healthy, you'll only need a pcp, and office visits are often free. |

ABSOLUTELY. You could get in a car wreck, get cancer, cut your finger, etc.
Also, if you do not have health insurance and get a disease and then get insurance, they can exclude the pre-existing condition....so basically you're screwed.
You might be able to find a health insurance with high deductibles and copays butlower monthly fees-- so it would come into play for emergencies but you probably wouldnt use it for mundane stuff. |

Just some advise from a female that was in her 20's and took a job with out health insurance because I was young and healthy. At age 25 I started passing out and long story short had to have a pacemaker. Never an unhealthy moment in my life til that point. You never know what is around the corner and the money you spend now each month will save you the thousands of dollars you end up owning the rest of your life when something unexpected does happen. I am now well over $50,000 in debt all from medical bills. Live and learn. |

Hey! That sounds realllly high for healthy male in tweens. Make sure you shop arround. Health insurance in USA is a must man. The health costs can rack up really quick if you ever get in trouble. Not worth the risk. |

What if a man in his early-mid twenties has a major accident and breaks both of his legs. The hospital bill alone costs 8500.00. The wheelchair costs 5000.00 The 9 months of physical therapy is another 12000.00
So, if this young man has 25k laying around, then no, he doesn't need insurance. But if he wants to be able to walk without limping the rest of his life, or if he wants to own a house or go to college at some point in his life, then there might be a "point" in buying insurance. |

Yes! If you have a serious problem come up it could put you in a severe financial hardship. If you choose not to though you should put the money in a savings account and draw interest and at least get a reward for your gamble. I know that it sounds foolish to someone who is young to carry insurance but you are taking a gamble because you never know when you may be involved in an accident and the people besides yourself, if this is the case, may not have insurance to cover you. It seems when we are young we feel bullet proof but this is not the case. Take it from someone who has had to learn several things the hard way. |

I'm a college student in my early twenties & I understand the financial burden of the cost. If your in good health, you should consider a discount medical membership like Cinergy Health. It's only a few bucks per month (between $7 - $15 depending on which membership). They provide you with the member's card & a list of the physicians, denists, and optomatrists (sp?) in your area that offer discounts to their members. Depending on what services you need, the discount fluxuates between 3% to 75%, but it's always better than paying full price. You can also get a copy of the exact discounts offered with each business for each different service. The company will also make all the appointments for you. So, instead of you calling the doc's office, you call Cinergy & they take all of your info. & set up the appointment.
I had an emergency two months ago & had to go to the Emergency room. I don't have any insurance & didn't have this membership either. My hostpital bills are outrageous. So, I checked into this afterward. I could have saved a few hundred dollars w/ this membership, even at the ER. But, that's why they say hind sight is 20/20.
Look up their website & it will give you alot more details. You can even type in your zip code & get a list of the doc's & hospitals in your area within a 5 or 10 mile radius that offer these discounts. |

Sounds high.
Look for a larger deductable, a catastrophe type insurance.
If you get real sick, no insurance will wipe you out. |

That sounds very high for a single person. You should look into that.
In Canada (bc) govt "health insurance" for the average adult depending on their income is only like maybe $50 a month.
It would be a good idea even if you are very healthy. You never know what could happen. If there is a medical history in your family of diabetes, cancer whatever it would be a very good idea. There is always the scare of a car accident or something... it could be anything.
It is just a good idea.
But shop around for different companies or plans and find one that suits you best before jumping on the first one. |

Yes, because you're getting older and you're more likely to need a hospital visit, and that will cost more then $200-300 a mo. I would try shopping around for a cheaper price. |

Health insurance is imperative unless you want to end up in the county hospital should you become ill or have an accident. A one week hospital stay could cost $20,000 or more. Yes, you need to buy health insurance, if it is financially feasible. My suggestion would be to buy a policy through Blue Cross/Blue Shield that has a $2,500 deductible or higher. It would be for a catastrophic loss only, so you would have to pay Urgent Care visits and that sort of thing yourself. But, it could be a lot less than $300 a month. Again, it would be there for a major illness or accident. |

Yes it is very important to have insurance. You may be healthy now but if you end up getting sick you will pay the price. Also, if you end up coming down with some illness it will be considered a pre-existing condition and you will not be able to get insurance. You can not wait until you get sick to get insurance. Just get the cheapest plan out there just so you have it. There are individual plans that can be bought for about $170 to $200 a month. Trust me its worth it. Or get a job that offers health insurance because they usually pay a portion of it. |

well, yes. Because major medical issues that crop up, without health insurance being in place, is a major reason for bankruptcy and cause for living in poverty for the rest of your life. |
|

You're not perfect either
 |
It's definantly worth it. Best though if you can find a job where your employer will offer it for cheap. |
