Is there any way I could change my insurance policy from being full cover to PIP only if I have a car loan?
I bought a car a year ago with a loan and a full cover insurance on it. I would like to change it to only PIP ( Personal Protection Insurance ) for 6 months to save up some money and pay off credit cards. Currently I pay 330$ a month with PIP only I would pay about 100$. I could save up to 1.200$. ( I know it may be a bit risky since I could get an accident but I'm willing to take the risk for a few months. Any suggestions? I'm 24 live in Florida and the car is an Audi A3 with Progressive.

Well, you'd be violating your loan contract, and it won't save you money.

So yes, your insurance agent can drop all that extra coverage. Then, your lender gets notified that all those coverages have been dropped, and THEN, in accordance with your loan agreement, they put "forced placement" coverage on you, and BILL YOUR LOAN for it. So, what was costing you $200 a month on your personal policy, will cost you about $600 a month, on your loan. That means, the first $600 every month that you send in, pays for the insurance (which, btw, won't pay YOU, only the lender). If you don't send in an extra $600 a month with your payment, within three months your car will be reposessed. Because, of course, you aren't making the LOAN payments, and you're only making partial INSURANCE payments.

So that's not going to work, in the long run - it will cost you MUCH more money by violating that lending agreement.

**Mitch doesn't realize in FL, you do NOT have to carry liability insurance - it's a true "no fault" state. But it's still a good idea, in case you ever want to drive out of the state.**

No you can't because you don't own the car. The company that gave you the loan still owns that car and will require you to maintain a certain amount of full coverage to protect their interest.

If you lapse in your payments when you get full coverage again your premiums will be extremely expensive.

More importantly the insurance company will notify your lean holder of your change in policy. The lean holder will tack on the price of their insurance on to your principal loan, which will cost much more than your regular insurance. They can do this because the bank owns the car until your loan is paid.

When a car is being financed, it must have full coverage insurance.

You have to also carry liability insurance. There is no law that says you have to carry comprehensive and collision coverage on a vehicle, but when you got the loan for the car, you probably signed an agreement to carry physical damage coverage on the vehicle as long as you have the loan. If you drop that coverage, the insurance company will notify your lender who will then purchase coverage for you. This is referred to as forced place coverage. It is usually much more expensive than coverage you could purchase on your own. Additionally, forced place coverage provides coverage for the lender only, NOT for you. In other words, you pay for it, but get no protection. Keep what you have or shop for less expensive coverage.
