Newlywed!
Is there any way you can get help with medical bills without health insurance?
So my fiance recently got rushed into the emergency room and had to get his appendix removed. He doesn't have health insurance. His brother had to have stitches on his hand a few months back and he said that the hospital paid for it, and he doesn't have health insurance either. And his sister said that sometimes catholic charities will donate money? (he went to a catholic hospital and he is catholic)...or sometimes the hospital will work out something to where they can knock off the majority of the bill? Of course he owes like 14,000 bucks and has no health insurance! Just wanted to know if any of you have been in this situation or works in a finance area in a hospital that knows if there is any way to get some kind of help? I know they will also set up payment plans...

And please don't give me a lecture on how important it is to have health insurance because I DO have health insurance! This is for my fiance and I am just concerned for him and would like to have some advice. Thanks!

And also...while he's paying off the bills, if he gets credit checks, will the medical bills show up on his credit check? I mean, I know they will if he's not paying them, but if he is making payments on time of course, I'm just asking if medical bills show up on credit checks...??

Call the hospital customer service immediately and ask to speak to a financial counselor.
Your options are going to depend on whether he was seen at a for profit or a not for profit facility.
Most hospitals offer private pay patients the same rate as insurance companies rates. Some will offer prompt pay discounts or have a payment plan that he can qualify for. Some facilities have a credit card for their hospital that will draw your payments out over a longer period of time and report on your credit as a credit card.
If he was seen at a not for profit facility he can possible qualify for some kind of charity assistance. Based on his income the hospital can write off so much as charity. This is
based on the federal government poverty guidelines.
I work in health care financial services for a not for profit hospital and the hardest problem we have is getting people to give us the information that we need to help them. So give them everything they ask for. They are there to help you, and if you for some reason cannot comply or have problems keeping any payment plan. Be sure to call them first. Be proactive and not reactive.
Once you are turned over to collections, it is too late for the hospital to help you.

P.S.S. This does not cover any of the physicians bills which will be seperate. You will have to contact their individual offices. But a lot of physicians, if they know you are working with the hospital for financial assistance, will offer some also.

Yes, medical bills do show up on credit checks.

He needs to call the hospital billing ASAP. There is help available if you ask. Problem is most people wait until they are in collections, and then no one will help you.

On his bill(s) there should be phone numbers to call. Start there, then if they can't help he should physically go to the hospital and talk to someone there.

Good luck

**Edit. The above answerer is 100% incorrect about the credit check. The 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act removed this protection for us citizens. Medical bills now are routinely reported to credit agencies and WILL lower your FICO/credit score. People really need to wake up to the new reality. Congress is no longer of the people, for the people. It is of the major corporations, for the major corporations. Truth, the other reality.

you know what.... my husband didnt have health insurance when he got his index finger cut off doing a side job. we have $9000 in medical bills. here is what we do. we can not afford it at freaking all. we pay $10 dollars a month. they can not do anything to him. he would be making payments and they can not send him to collections. I HAVE HEARD...that after a while of that, they will stop sending you bills because they see that you are attempting to pay. we have had no problems and have been paying 10 bucks a month for almost a year now... good luck

Yes, he can call the billing department, see if he can get a repricing to a cash price. And, he can contact his church - I know our parish helps out with medical bills sometimes. Then he can hit up friends and family, and it wouldn't kill him to work a second job for a year to pay this off, either.

Everyone here gave you a good suggestion. I think the first step is to contest the bill. You can decrease it probably 30%, after that do small payments to avoid colection or choose another option.
Try to Be in controle of the situation.

Marysue
Talk to the hospital’s finance department. You can be proactive and contact them now or wait until you get the bill and their contact info will be on there. At minimum, you should be able to set up a payment plan

Business boy
You need to go to the hospital

JRM
there's medicaid for medically indigent people. He should check with the hospital. They usually have someone who can work with him on this.

i really dont know but to contact the hospital to see if you can get on some payment plan and also if they send you to collection it doesnt count against you in a credit check. All creditors know that health care is expensive and they end up writing it off and dont count that at all against your credit.

Depends on where you live but if he is working then he will most likely NOT receive assistance.

You have to be extremely poor to receive any kind of assistance. I'm talking abject poverty and then it is woefully inadequate AND takes a good deal of time to procure.

People that become disabled must prove that they are very poor to get assistance and by that time they are usually homeless.

Good luck.

Peace.

EDIT: Medicaid is for people that are NOT working or have extremely high medical bills. AND they have many appointments at DHS to prove their poverty, making it impossible to work. So, to the one who answered "medicaid", won't be happening. Also, you can contact the hospital but they will put him on a payment plan. Be careful not to pay any bills with a check or give the hospital any information to collect the debt. If he misses a payment they can go to court, get a judgment and completely empty his accounts, when he least expects it. So be very careful when dealing with the hospital or any collection agency. They now notify you that they are attempting to collect a debt and any information obtained will be used for that purpose. BELIEVE THEM!!

WRITE YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. One health care emergency often wipes out the average American worker.
