It astounds and shocks me that so many people can make broad sweeping claims about insurance companies. People call them crooks, and claim that they steal money. Yet, most people don't know anything about the industry or the companies that comprise it. Insurance is a great tool for society to control the uncertainty associated with everyday life.
Without it people undoubtedly would have to pay more for everything from home care products to oil. Insurance helps companies offset huge losses that result from legal actions against them, or material losses like when the hurricanes hit the gulf coast. Without proper insurance coverage companies would either cease to exist (thus reducing supply of a particular good or service) or have to transfer that loss to consumers in the form of price increases.
Sure, insurance companies do try to avoid paying claims. Can you blame them? Fraud is prevalent throughout the U.S. and the world, for years many people saw insurance companies as giant ATM's that would pay claims on ridiculous medical conditions. The fact of the matter is that, like any business, when you start to lose more money than you take in alarm bells go off. Stricter claims management and higher premiums are the result of this fraudulent behavior. So who is really to blame here, the company that provides you with peace of mind, and not to mention that is hoping you don't have a loss, or the thousands of people who regularly commit insurance fraud? I think the answer is obvious. It is unfortunate that so many people feel that they are entitled to huge sums of money when they suffer a loss, unfortunately if that was the case 100% of the time there would be no insurance companies. So the next time you complain about insurance companies, take a good look in the mirror-or around your neighborhood-it may just be you that is causing all your insurance problems. |

I think the catch 22 is that if you're not risky, they're willing to insure you for peanuts. Thing is, you'll probably live long enough that the money you get will be of little worth when you make a claim.
On the other hand, if you're risky, the premiums are so high the only way for you to make a buck is to be able to claim even SOONER!
I think it's great for impulsive spenders though -- the forced savings let tham save enough money which would've been spent with little regard anyway. |

Not sure what you're really asking here. Life insurance? P&C? Liability?
Why is there a catch 22? Bottom line, is, make sure you ask your agent a million questions, read the contract (you have 10 - 30 days to return it to get your $$ back . . . life insurance, at least). |
