Is this even possible?
My mother-in-law asked my husband and I to take out a life insurance policy on her in case of her death. Can you even do that? I was always under the impression that you take these out on YOURSELF and you designate who gets the money. I'm thinking she has things backwards. Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks!

She is dealing with cancer and wants to make sure we are "taken care of" if she passes away. We'd be doing it more for her peace of mind than the money.

Why does she want you to do this?

You certainly can take out a policy on her life, with her signed consent, and then you would pay the premiums. But this is a financial decision that needs a good justification.

Life insurance was originally for providing money after one's death to replace income from the insured. The typical case was for a family with one income, say the father, that would have no income in case of his death.

There are many other possibilities now, but you should have some good reason to spend money on life insurance. Is your mother-in-law providing for you financially? Would you need some money in case of her death? Do you have the cash to pay the premiums?

You can do this. Is there a reason to?

You could have before she got sick. If she is being treated for cancer, it is too late. No insurance company will take her if she is currently being treated. Sorry.

Every policy has an insured, a beneficiary and a policy owner. These can be three different people if you like. The insured does not need to be the policy owner - although the if it is not the insured (your mother-in-law) will have to sign the policy application anyway. By the way, the policy owner is the one who pays the premiums, and the beneficiary is the one who collects any payment from insurance.

Nope, anyone can own a policy on someone else, if they have their permission.

It's pretty common, especally for spouses, that the husband owns the policy on the wife, and the reverse. The person who owns the policy, gets to name the beneficiary, AND is responsible for paying the premium.

So. If you guys want to pay the premium (which, the older you get, the drastically more it costs), you CAN own a policy on her life. One of you, at least.

You can do it, but if she has cancer it's likely not worth the cost as she'd only qualify for a "graded benefit plan" -- one that doesn't pay the full amount for 3 years.

Anyone can take a life policy out on anyone else. All the insurance company wants is for the premium to be paid.

Unfortunately, if your mother in law already has cancer, its very unlikely that she will qualify for a life insurance policy--and if she does, the premium will be off the charts.

Best of luck to you.

of cource. as far as there is an insurable interest you can insure her life.

Christie
Most likely, since she has been diagnosed with cancer, it will be impossible for her to get life insurance now. If it's possible to get it, the insurance premiums are going to be sky-high.

Generally, when purchasing life insurance, the covered person has to take a physical. Coverage is usually denied if there is a major illness. I mean, think about it. Why would an insurance company knowingly issue a life policy on someone they KNOW is going to die in the near future? It just doens't make good business sense. It's a risk they are unwilling to take, and rightfully so.

It's wonderful that she wants to make sure you and your husband are taken care of, but I'm afraid it's probably too late to make those provisions. Of course, you should contact a local agent and ask these questions, just to be sure.

It is what is called insurable interest - people do this with relatives and or business partners do this a great deal. Unfortunately if the policy is on your mother-in-law, it is on her life. the medical underwriting is on her medical conditions. If she has cancer she may not be insurable. Can you call a local life insurance agent in the area, maybe someone a friend could refer you to to talk in general terms. Good luck
