Ive broken my laptop and have house insurance - is it easy to claim from them?

Well it depends on how it got broken I suppose.

My mum and dads computer stopped working after an electricity cable got hit by lightning and they sent them a new one out.

You need to be more specific on what happened to your laptop. Dropped and broke it would not be covered on a standard ho3 or ho4 policy

You would have to be more exact how did you break it? It would be inspected so if used after loss date it will be noted. Secondly you will have a replacement with the same technical specification so you will not be getting a new top of the range lap top just exactly what you had before only new! Plus them may be able to fix it - so nothing new!

clumsiness is not covered
if some one else broke it for you it is an accident .
depends on who are you with and the fine print of the coverage. maybe you are overpaying if you save that money you can afford a better lap top.

It all depends on the policy. Some policies are on a 'named peril' basis. That means that the way in which it occurred must be listed in your policy. In a named peril policy, there would be no coverage.

If you have a policy that is an 'all-risk' policy, then there likely be coverage. An all-risk policy means that there is coverage UNLESS the cause of loss is listed as an exclusion. I have not seen an all-risk type of policy that excludes dropping.

I seen claims paid where someone simply drops a bottle of bleach on their carpet. Since they had an all-risk policy, it was paid.

You need to call your agent.

Homeowners/renters insurance covers your contents for named perils only unless you by some chance have an added endorsment covering "broken" items. What you would need in this instance to cover your broken laptop is a personal articals policy, which does cover "opps I broke it" type of ordeals at a pretty low cost... Hope this helped!

Unless you have a non-standard homeowners policy, or have it seperately insured on a special endorsment, it's not covered. The standard HO3 covers contents on a "named perils" basis, and oops I broke it isn't a named peril.

welcome news
It all depends on the cover you have and the cause of the damage.

If, for instance, you opened up a virus and it erased your programmes then that would be excluded.

If the damage was caused by one of the normal 'special perils' then damage would be covered: fire: lightning, explosion, storm, escape of water, theft, riot/ commotion being the most common. Damage caused by these perils also may cover household goods temporarilly removed from the home (theft from a locked building).

Some accidental damage is covered under a normal household policy - you would have to see whether it extended to computers and if then lap-tops were excluded.

If your policy is extended to cover full accidental damage and accidental damage cover to laptops were not excluded and your laptop was damaged accidentally, e.g. knocked off the table then it would be covered.

With regards to all-risks cover (covering against loss or damage anywhere (virtually)) you would have to see if your policy has been extended to that cover and then to see if the laptop is defined as being in the types of articles covered.

There will, of course, be an excess under the policy - at least £50.00 but if you have bought direct from an insurer/ bank a lot more (how do you imagine they keep costs down?)

Surprisingly if you are insured by your building society under a mortgage you are more likely to be covered as they provide very good policies - but you certainly pay for them!

The claims procedure itself should be simple - in your policy is a telephone number to ring - call the number with your policy details to hand, explain what happened. If damage is covered then a claim form may be sent. You maay also have to provide details of when/ where you bought the laptop.

Last point - if you use the laptop for business purposes you may find that it is excluded anyway (especially on a direct policy)
