Joint car insurance policy with boyfriend?
My car insurance company is willing to give me and my boyfriend joint coverage for our vehicles.... but my BF's medical insurance won't cover "co-habitating heterosexual couples"..... anybody know why that is?
Additional Details
Yes... we're not married, but if car insurance covers non-married couples why won't medical insurance companies cover them too?

Because most health insurance covers married people.

Your car insurance can cover both because you are living in the same household and driving each others cars. You will both be listed as named insureds on the policy.

Shacking up is nice - but it is not the same as marriage - so you don't get the same benefits as those who have entered into the marriage contract.

Trying to save a buck I see. Well, Car and health insurance are too very different things. If your break up its easy to take them off the policy. But in insurance it the whole life death thing...very confusing and complicated.

My solution...get married!

Insurance companies are risk-averse. A marriage is theoretically a stable relationship and coverage for the spouse is easy to calculate statistically. Marriage also, again theoretically, shows a degree of commitment and obligation on the part of the insured. Not so with casual relationships. If they covered a bf/gf policy like that, what would keep your bf from going from one accident-prone gf to the next, racking up insurance costs? How would the company calculate risks? Get real; if you want the advantages of marriage, get married. Otherwise, don't expect the rest of the world to subsidize you playing house.

In the case of the car, the insurance company is insuring the car. They are not insuring a person/family.

In terms of health insurance, their policies are based on single people or families (i.e. people who can show legal relationship with each other who are primary relatives). So you have to be married, brother/sister, father/mother, grandfather/grandmother (kind of a gray area) to be insured under the same policy.

Sure, because it drastically increases their rate exposure. He could have a different girl move in each month, and then a year down the road, they're on the hook for 12 women.

It's too hard to track.

And, on that joint policy, you realize that if you break up, and YOUR car gets totalled, you can't get the check cashed without his signature, right?

It's a BAD IDEA, to share money (including insurance, and ESPECIALLY joint major purchases like cars and houses) with someone you're not married to. It usually comes back to bite you in the rear.

The reason you are getting married rates and married status on your car insurance, is that your agent is willing to lie for you. As far as the insurance company knows, you are married. If they knew you weren't, you wouldn't be getting the married discount. The people who are enrolling your boyfriend's medical benefits at work aren't willing to lie for you. That is the difference.

Not sure. But I think it's a bad idea to go "joint" on that kind of thing till your married. Don't care how close you are.
