Just discovered my husband's mom, 90, has no life ins. He's on only-child & our $ is limited. Any suggestions?
She is still in good health, with the exception of some mild Alzheimer's, which makes me wonder if maybe she's forgotten she has it. Her husband passed away almost 40 years ago now, so one would think she would be a person who should realize the importance of having insurance. It seems we should be thinking now about how we are going to pay for funeral expenses when the inevitable happens, being that she is 90. Her parents lived til they were 93 and 95, so perhaps we have a few years to prepare. Any ideas?

Most life insurance companies won't issue a policy to someone over the age of 80 or 85, so chances are you won't be able to get a policy on her.

To find out if she has a policy, you might be able to go through her bank records and look for an automatic withdrawal from an insurance company. Or if she has a safety deposit box or something check around for the policy book. or she should receive annual statements from the company.

If she doesn't have a policy in force, about all you can do is start saving. Pre-pay of of the funeral costs through a funeral home if you can.

Wish there were more options.

contact a funeral home and ask them.also cremation is cheaper.
Funerals run here in Tx from $6,000 and up.Last I heard on cremation $800.You will just have to check in your neighborhood. The caskets and flowers are the highest.

She will not find life insurance available at that age. If you are worried about funeral expenses, you can purchase prepaid plans fo rthat.

Start saving your money. You're not going to be able to buy insurance on her now, for less than the payout of the policy.

Cremation is the cheapest, or she could donate her body to science-would be good for Alzheimer's research. Also if her husband was in the service she is eligible for FREE burial in a Veteran's cemetery. You would need her husband's discharge papers. There is a military cemetery in every state and the funerals are very nice so it's something to look into.
