Most people who use Kaiser have a love/hate relationship with them. I liked the low co-pays and low premiums, but I didn't really like the limited choices for doctors. I was also a bit off-put that they were taking a bunch of Medi-cal patients at the Kaiser facility I used. It looked like Grapes of Wrath in the waiting rooms. There were a bunch of kids with various bodily fluids flowing from their bodies and the parents were seemingly oblivious.
On the pediatric side, I really liked my daughter's physician. She really took an interest in her despite her screaming tantrums anytime she saw a white jacket. When we were in a position to get a PPO, we took it. More choices and the costs were comparable, at least in my situation.
You could do much worse than Kaiser. I'll leave it at that. |

I was born in a Kaiser hospital and have had Kaiser coverage my whole life. First on my parents' plan, and now on my own as an adult. Between my two parents and myself, we have had LOTS of medical issues, diseases, disorders and procedues done at Kaiser hospitals (them more than me). And I can honestly say that we have had 99% EXCELLENT service and care there. None of us were ever treated like "just a number", but rather very personally. :)
I know that some people have had really bad experiences at Kaiser hospitals, and my own aunt is one of them. I acknowledge that completely. HOWEVER, the truth is that people will have bad and good experiences with any HMO, PPO, private practice or clinic, etc. etc. I know many people who had very lousy experiences with NON-Kaiser facilities, so there ya go! In fact, my own grandma had bad experiences with a private-practice doctor.
Somehow Kaiser has become the "scapegoat" that everyone likes to pick on when things go wrong, and I don't fully know why. :( Things go wrong plenty of times with other healthcare plans and facilities!! I agree that some people have had disappointing or frustrating experiences with Kaiser, but neither my parents nor I ever have! :) It might depend on WHERE the Kaiser is, too. We live in the San Jose area and have only gone to Kaiser Santa Teresa and Kaiser Santa Clara -- both excellent! |

Generally speaking Kaiser varies in its scope of customer satisfaction.
In California, the Bay area has A+++++ Kaiser marks, whereas in Fresno, the customer service rates an "F".
Regardless, you have to know how to navigate the HMO system in order to truly receive satisfaction.
I am not saying Kaiser is bad, just a different system.

I've had Kaiser for the past 5 yrs and in spite of my initial misgivings about them, I've been happy with the care I've gotten. I'm diabetic, so the drug benefits save me a LOT of cash, and the doctors I've dealt with have been very attentive. There are occasional exceptions, but a survey firm they contract with regularly follows up on many office visits with questionares for your impressions of your last visit, and I believe those results carry a lot of influence with the organization and the caregivers. Also, consumer reports just had an article last month rating the various HMO's, and Kaiser was in several positions near the top. There are better HMO's out there I'm sure, but for what I'm paying, i don't think I could find better care. I'm with the Northwest (Oregon and Washington) group. |

If you can choose another option such as a PPO or POS you have greater choice and flexibility. As far as HMO's are concerned Kaiser is among the worst. The limitations they place upon there members are far more stringent than Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna etc. Kaiser will refuse necessary treatment and do not have any pre-existing condition no matter how minor. I would recommend that you weigh your options even if you are perfectly healthy things happen and you want to be covered Kaiser does not give those assurances. I am also not a fan of referrals. PPO or POS give you more options you do not need a referral to see a specialist. The coverage level for out of network is higher and coverage usually a broad spectrum of hospitals and practitioners. |
