Jessica C | Lack of heath insurance in Georgia? |
My friend's husband got into a motorcycle accident recently and ended up going to the E.R. Problem is, they don't have health insurance because he was fired from his job. I've been told that the tax payers have to take care of the cost. Are there any consequences for him, or he just doesn't have to pay anything?? That seems crazy. Why would anyone have health insurance if thats the case? |

He will be billed if he does not have insurance. They simply can not refuse to treat him if he has no coverage, but he still must pay himself. If he decides not to pay then it will be turned over for collection. He can work out a payment with the hospital where he pays a little each month, but it must be paid or it will go on his credit report. If it is not paid, eventually the hospital will write it off and it does cost those of us who have insurance in the way of increased costs when we go. |

Nope thats not the case at all. I also have a friend in the same predictament and she had to have surgery. She did not have health Insurance but she did co-own a House with her X husband. She had no income and was living with her Sister. The hospital put a Lien on her House until they are paid. If her and her X sell any property with my friends name on it, the hospital gets their money off the top. BTW I live in North Carolina and alot of people here cannot afford Health Insurance either. |

its the truth, taxpayers will foot the bill just like they do for all the illegals getting healthcare free. i don't mind paying my part for those like your friend who probably has been paying taxes for years too but to pay for someone here illegally who hasn't paid a dime into the system irks me. the thing is your friend needs to tell the hospital he doesn't have the money, they will consider him 'indigent' and the costs will be passed along to those of us with healthcare and the taxpayers. for example...i had to go in for a mri for my knee, the hospital wanted to charge me $2500.00 for it but a private mri place charged $500.00...why? because the hospital wanted to charge me more because i had health insurance and that would cover their costs of giving free healthcare to those that don't have it. you're right too...lots of ppl aren't paying for health insurance because its not cost effective. another example...i had to get some med's filled today, i told the pharmacy i didn't want to use my insurance for them...and they were $14.00 but if i used my insurance my co-pay would have been $35.00 ! doesn't make sense does it? |

Yes, he will be billed for services rendered. He cannot be refused medical care in USA. However, he may end up having to declare medical bancruptcy because of this. If you have no health insurance, you can lose everything because of medical needs. You also don't get to choose where you go and usually do not get very good care if have no health insurance. Most likely it will end up being taxpayers and the insured that pay for his care. This is part of the reason health insurance is so expensive now! The costs are passed along to those of us that actually pay for health insurance with higher fees being charged. |

You are correct nothing will happen to him unless your state laws allows a hospital to put a lien on him. The tax payers and the people that are insured are the ones that pick up the tab. The insurance's companies get charged a little bit extra for someone who is insured to make up for some of their loss for not collecting debts from their patients. But this also happens with Medicare patients. So with them charging the insurance company higher rates. It trickles down to the insured. The taxpayers and the insurance companies are the ones that have to pick that up to. It's called the trickled down effect. It effects us all when someone does not carry health insurance. |

Oh, the hospital will put it through collections, and it will ruin his credit if he doesn't pay.
People have HEALTH insurance, because they want to have a bank account, or own a house. Once creditors get through with you, you won't have either. They want to not have their wages attached. And they want maintenance and preventative care - hospitals will only give you lifesaving, or urgent need care - and they'll still bill you for it. |
