it totally depends how valuable it was. It should be covered under your home insurance, but keep in mind you probably have a deductible, and your rate may go up.

I know I'm contributing late - but here's the deal -

Generally, this type of item is covered under your homeowners (or renters) insurance - assuming its not for business purposes, it would be covered under the section of the policy "personal property covered anywhere in the world". Typically that clause has something like a $2500 maximum limit.

The next thing to consider is the value of the camera as well as the age and condition of the camera. Finally, you need to know what the deductible is on your policy. Sometimes electronic items have a different deductible than the main policy. Typically, unless you have a premium policy, your camera will be valued at what they call actual cash value - this means they will deduct for the age and condition of the camera- w/o knowing the description of the camera - expect this to be about a 40% deduction of off the replacement cost.

So, here's how the calculation will work:

Replacement price of camera - depreciation deduction - deductible = What you will receive.

So typically, unless you have a high value camera and/or a premium policy, it's probably not going to be worth filing a claim.

Likely the cost of the camera would not be enough to have an insurance claim. The best thing to do would be to call the train station and inquire about a lost and found contact and hope that someone turns it in.

Follow up with the company that offers your homeowners or renters insurance. They may cover the cost of the camera after the deductible.
