Thats Life
Life Insurance Question?
i had life insurance through my employer for over one year i got fired but before i got fired i made double my salary before i left when you have life insurance and it completely paid do you get what you paid on it back or is their no cash value just wondering cause if so that would be a alot of money in return

It depends on what type of life insurance policy it was. If it was group term, there will be no cash value....ever. You cannot get your money back. It was part of your benefit package.

If the policy happened to be a permanent policy, sponsored by the employer, and on a payroll deduction group plan, it would accumulate cash or loan value, but none within just one year. You cannot get your money back, but you could continue to pay this type of policy premium on your own, and keep the policy in force.

Your question is an example of why I recommend that people buy individual life insurance, regardless of how much coverage they have through a group term policy. What the employer can provide, he can also take away, by cutting benefits, layoffs, or just plain firing an employee.

I recommend that you contact a LOCAL agent, and have him/her do a Financial Need Analysis (FNA), or other Total Needs Program, to help you decide how much life insurance you need. Also, you will determine if you need a disability income policy. Chances are greater that you will be disabled, rather than die prior to your age 65.

It was probably a term policy, meaning no cash value. Even if it were a cash calue policy, there's not much (if anything) after only a little over a year.

You need to learn about the financial aspects of your life.

Start with your goals ... what do you want to buy during your life, what are your responsibilities to your family and to yourself.

Chances are, you had a term policy through work. When you separated from your employer, the policy stopped covering your (most likely).

If you had a family, a mortgage and other debts and became too ill and had to stop working, it would be very hard to obtain a life insurance (or any insurance) policy at any price.

If all you had was a policy from your employer, you and your family would be up a creek without a paddle.

Go meet with several financial professionals and map out YOUR financial future.

Good Luck

Unless you have continued to pay the premiums after you left the job the policy has probably lapsed. Most employee benefit type life insurance arrangements do not build up cash value anyway. Some do offer to let you take the coverage when you leave if you make arrangements to pay the premiums directly to the insurance company.

Employer group life insurance is term insurance - there is no cash value. Your salary has nothing to do with it.

No, there's no cash value. It's group term policy. It's costing your employer, maybe $5 a month, so it's not like it's big bucks anyway.
