Life Insurance for a smoker?
I'm only 28 but am thinking of getting life insurance.
I'm quite healthy but have been a smoker for 15 years.
How much more can I expect to pay for insurance as a smoker?
Do companies have different rates based on how much you smoke?

I only smoke 3 or 4 per day and think I should pay less than a pack a day smoker.

All insurance companies have different rates for smokers and non-smokers. They even have different rates for the non-smokers by separating who is healthy and who isn't healthy.

But smokers will pay a very high rate compare to non-smokers because of the high mortality rate associated with smoking.

A smoker is a smoker. Some might have better rates for cigar smokers.

Just by way of example, a Canada Life Term 20 policy with a $100K Death Benefit is $159 a year as a smoker. That same policy as a non-smoker is $125 a year.

Different mortality scales place your mortality at different ages. For example, Female is 86 as a Non-Smoker, and 82 as a Smoker on CIA 86/92 mortality scales.

Different insurance companies rate health risks differently so you need to get a number of quotes to find out how much more a smokers policy will cost you.

A non smoker means zero cigarettes. Insurance companies don't distinguish between light smokers and heavy smokers and a number of studies show that a few cigarettes a day is just about as dangerous as a pack or more. Most insurance companies consider no cigarettes for one year as a non smoker. Don't lie or your beneficiary may not be able to collect. If you need life insurance buy what you can afford now and get a premium reduction when you quit. That way if your health situation changes you will have some insurance. At a later date you may become uninsurable.

Some life insurance companies that have experience and specialize in insuring smokers have more competitive rates and more classifications for smokers, based on the amount of cigarettes they smoke.

Life insurance for a smoker may cost up to 50% more per year than life insurance for a non-smoker. That adds up quick.

Did you know that medical research has found that smoking shortens the life span of men by 14.5 years and of women by 13.2 years?

Due to these discoveries, life insurance companies decided to change how they underwrite and rate term life insurance for people who smoke.

The rate for smokers is higher than non-smokers, sometimes by as much as $110 per month or more. For example, a 10 year term life insurance policy for $100,000 of coverage through one insurance company is $26.22 per month for a smoker and $14.36 per month for a non-smoker. The higher rate is due to the shorter life expectancy.

To find the most competitive rates you may want to find a local life insurance agent with access to carriers that specialize in insuring smokers, or you can compare free life insurance quotes online from several insurance carriers to find the lowest rate from a highly-rated insurance carrier.

I hope that helps. Best of luck to you.

The rates are lower for smart people and higher for stupid people not light smokers and heavy smokers. At your age you still have time to quit but with a life expectancy about 10 years less than your non-smoking contemporaries you will pay about a third more. As you get older the gap can double.

If you quit, the money you spend for cigarettes will be more than enough to pay for life insurance.

If you've smoked 1 cigarette in the last 12 months you'll pay a tobacco rate. That's about 4-5 times the rate a non-smoker will pay. The insurance companies doesn't differentiate how much you smoke...only the type of tobacco. An occasional cigar smoker can get a non-smoker rate if you know what insurance company to go to.

Look on my site and you can see how much the difference is between smokers and non-smokers.
