The government will most likely bail them out. They already provided an 86 billion line of credit which is almost the equivalent of buying them out.

Keep your policy....
IF they filed for bankruptcy protection (which we now know won't happen with the gov't assistance) the life insurance holders should be fine. If anything they'd spin off the profitable insurance unit to a buyer in order to raise cash. AIG doesn't sell insurance...American General does (as does their other subsidiaries)....keep that in mind. AIG just owns American General. |

First, IF they went bankrupt and disappeared then your policy would still be covered for $300,000 or so from state insurance that backs the insurance companies.
The insurance division is an entirely different company than the one responsible for the mortgage related loses. That loss does not take away money that is backing the insurance policies. It takes away profits from the parent company, AIG, which owns many daughter companies.
Worst case scenario is that the life division is sold off to raise money. Then the buying company would still be required to honor the life policies that they have purchased. |

You don't need to do anything and don't cancel your policies. The problems with AIG are with the parent company and mortgage insurance they offer banks and other lenders. The AIG life insurance, general insurance (including commercial) and retirement services are subsidiaries of the parent company, are adequately capitalized, regulated, and are not affected by the short-term liquidity problems we are hearing about. Anyway, the government just approved a loan of $85 Billion.

I could have misheard, but I thought I heard on MSNBC that the government gave AIG 85 billion dollars to save them. In exchange they now own 80% of AIG. So I think they're pretty safe from bankruptcy. |

If you do any business with any of these AIG companies, cancel policies immediately. Pass the list on. Get people to pull out of the corrupt system.
