I want to take out a life insurance policy, and I understand they ask you about scuba diving. I haven't been diving in a few years, but I am certain that I will go again at some point, although not many times.
Does diving influence your premium a lot? Is there no allowance for how often you go?

Are you a certified diver? I think that's the key thing. If you're "Certified" they assume you will be going scuba diving more often. If you did it once on vacation & may do it again but haven't gotten certified then I don't think it's an issue. |

You can get the best rates available if you are with the correct company.
Insurance companies look at recreational diving based on a few of the following factors.
certification - do you have it?
Dive Depths - the breakdowns they look at are less than 75feet, 76-100 feet, 101-130 feet, 131-150 feet, greater than 150 feet.
If your average dives are 100 feet or less, best rates available from a few companies...they do not hold your cert dive against you for underwriting.
if you dive deeper, rates increase accordingly. if you dive in wrecks, etc.. you will be penalized.
if your diving is job related, all bets are off and case considered on case by case basis. |

When my husband got his life insurance from AAA they asked him and the premiums did not change so i guess it just depends on the insurance company and maybe how deep you go he usually only goes 30-45 feet deep nothing major. The best thing to do is call around and ask.

If you are working with a knowledgeable insurance broker who is used to underwriting questions like this, it is very easy to navigate the large market of insurance companies. They will ask you questions like how deep you go, how often, what type of sites you explore, do you go with a buddy, are you certified, etc...
Depending on your history, some companies will decline and others will be able to offer better than standard. |

My company also asks about piloting a plane, parachuting, etc. The question is do you plan on going scuba diving and others. It doesn't ask for specifics and I have not had anyone answer this yet. So I cannot be specific about it. |

Your statement "I am certain that I will go again at some point" is false. There is always the possibility that you will develop an medical condition that makes it impossible for you to scuba dive. Therefore, you can say that you have not been scuba diving in the last few years, and do not know if you will again. |
