Life insurance benefits?
I have to sign up for benefits at work and am wondering how much life insurance myself and husband should have, is there a certain percentage or rule to go by. We have 2 children a 13 and 15 year old.

There are LOTS of rules, starting with, 10X your income, and getting more complicated from there.

Luckily (?) you can't get enough insurance at work to be overinsured. So get the max they let you have.

Take what you earn ... divide by what you feel is a reasonable rate of return without undue risk ... that will give you the amount of money you need to replace your current standard of living. Many people insure that amount.

It is reasonable to deduct the amount of cash and semi-liquid investment, such as stocks, you have available.

I'll give you an example. Say you earn $80,000 a year. You feel that 7% is a reasonable and safe rate of return. You would need $1,142,000 to replace your standard of living. Most people would buy $1,000,000 to $1,250,000 of life insurance.

But, let's say you had $400,000 in investments that could be liquidated fairly easily. That would mean you only need $742,000 to replace the balance of your income.

I don't recommend including real estate that might be difficult to sell ... or retirement plans. They have many rules and restrictions on them. Besides, your surviving spouse will need them for retirement.

BTW, in today's world ... where it is common for both spouses to work and contribute to the standard of living ... this computation/purchase of life insurance ... should be done for both.

Workplace insurance can often times costs more than individual life insurance. That is because of ERISA. It prohibits discrimination. So the workplace pricing is unisex and typically uni-smoker. Usually priced at male smoker rates. So a female or a non-smoker can usually save money by buying their life insurance outside of their employer.

There is a quick and easy way to determine how much life insurance you and your husband should have - You can use a life insurance calculator to help you find out.

You answer some questions and the calculator instantly tells you how much life insurance may be necessary for your situation.

You can use the term life isnurance calculator at http://www.term-life-online.com/term-life-insurance-calculator.html

I hope that helps! Best of luck to you and your family.

I'm not an expert but I have had to make this decision. I believe that at the very least, life insurance on the working spouse should cover funeral costs, elimination of all debts including mortgages and monthly expenses including child care and education costs for the period of time it will take the surviving spouse to get a well paying job. Five years is a good estimate if additional education is required. Keep in mind if the surviving spouse does not have valued job skills then it doesn't make sense for him to prematurely enter the workforce. Considering the ages of your kids, you may want to consider college costs for them in your calculations.
One more thing, if you have a choice between term and whole life, choose term unless you have a specific wealth-building strategy around a whole life policy.

always an opinion
You should ask your HR manager who the broker is for your company. It is the agents responsibility to sit down with you and figure out how much you need. This is free to you so use it.

P.S. In response to the person that said most life coverage through work is accidental death. You are confused. That is a rider on top of regular insurance. For example you have 100K in life with AD&D coverage. If you die in an accident your benificiary recieves 200K.

Stated quite simply, financial experts recommend that you have 8 to 10 times your salary in life insurance benefits.

Whatever you can get at work for a very cheap cost, get.

You should get with a level premium term life policy to cover the amount needed that you cannot get through your employer. The length should be long enough to cover your needs, however long that is.

You actually would do better to forgo the life insurance that you get at work. Why? Chances are it could be accidental life- you MUST die by accident for beneficiaries to receive benefits. However, you probably won't die by accident. Also, you cannot get as much protection as you need by your employers insurance.

You would need about 10-15 times your annual salary to be fully protected.
