laura m | Life insurance-contingency? |
I sound like I am snooping on my husband...tell me what this means...he told me that I have 100% of his life insurance policy if he dies. He told me that he would want me to give 20% to him mom and 20% to his dad. Then I found a letter from the company that lists his mom as "contingent" for 50%. Was he lying to me? What does this mean? Thanks much. Additional Details He just told me to give his parents each 20% and I know this looks bad especially if and when we ever have kids...and no there was no one else listed for the other 50%. |

It means, if you die before him, or at the same time as him, THEN his mom gets the half. Hopefully, the other half goes to the kids. |

The contingent beneficiary is the person who receives the life insurance proceeds if the primary beneficiary and insured have passed away. |

Sounds like he is telling you the truth, you should be the 100 percent benef. involved, if you should predecease your husband, the contigeny benefit would have your mother inlaw and father in law as primary bene's |

There is a beneficiary - who gets the money from the policy.
Contingent beneficiary is the person that gets the money if the primary beneficiary is no longer living.
So If you and your husband die together - say in a car accident, the money goes to his Mom.
If you out live him - you get the money and his parents get nothing.
Did it list someone else as a contingent beneficiary for the other 50%? |

No, but you guys should probably know what you've got.
The "contingent" is the person who is the beneficiary if the primary beneficiary dies. For example, if both you and your husband died in a car crash, his mother would be the contingent beneficiary.
Here's the question. Right now, it looks if he dies, you get 60 percent, and each of his parents get 20 percent. Without getting too nosy, do his parents need that money? If they're retired and have no income coming in, they shouldn't need the extra. But if you're the survivor, have a house and kids to pay for only one income, that's a big deal.
Don't worry about the contingency, but do discuss the beneficiary situation with him unless 60 percent of the death benefit will cover all your needs if he gets hit by a bus tomorrow. |

The contingent person is the person who is "second" to get the money if you are dead before your husband dies.
I believe what your husband likely means is, if he dies and you receive the life insurance you should give 20% to his mom and 20% to his dad. If you die first, he probably has it set up as 50% to each of them. |
