Life insurance for my father-n-law?
My sister-n-laws are interested in purchasing a life insurance policy for their father who is 62 years old for future funeral cost expenses. They figure that a $10,000 should be sufficient and we can pay if off together (payment would be splint into 3). However, he is old, he drinks, and has had a stroke. (I do not really know if he smokes) So my question is... is this a good idea? I am guessing that because of his age and history of having a stroke and being a drinker that the premium will be pretty high. What other alternatives would you suggest? (I know my husband and I can make the funeral payment when, God forbid the event happens, but my sister-n-laws do not EVER have money... )

About the sentance stating that my SNL never have money... yes, they never do... and I have to be stuck with making the payments. That is why I think that just to leave it alone and when the day comes that we will have to make such arrangements, well we all pay our part. Hey, thats what credit cards are for should they not have money at that time. Right?

best thing to do is call an life insurance company and ask questions.

Given his health situation, especially the stroke, you are going to be hard pressed to find an affordable policy. He is probably going to be classified as uninsurable by most life insurance companies.

I hate to say it, but if he doesn't have the desire to quit drinking and save up for his own funeral then why should all of you. Obviously it is not a priority to him. I would just wait until he dies and see what you can afford at the time. Hopefully you will have a little warning as his health declines and maybe you can each scratch some cash together out of your savings.

It's a great idea if you can find an affordable policy. Do a google search for life insurance.

I'm a life agent for a well know company. You and your family are looking at very high rates even at just 10,000 worth of coverage. Life insurance is based on a 100 year life span. He is already at 62 and the life span for an average male is around 75. The less years to 100 the more expensive. His stroke might not even let him get a policy. Life insurance underwriters also look at what medication he takes and the smoking. Yes term life might be the cheapest, but at his age i would suggest to find a funeral home and see if they have a burial plan.

i would call a life insurance company and talk with them. Now you know who is really going to pay for this? Your last sentence said it "my sister-n-laws do not EVER have money" . I wish you luck.

Well, you can buy it, but it's likely to cost about $10,000. Paid up front.

Remember, the insurance company is in business to make money, and the odds will NEVER be in favor of the insured.

You're probably best off just to put the money off to the side, where it can earn a little interest.
