My Addiction
Life insurance question...when can I expect a check?
My mom passed away a few weeks ago. Blessedly, she had life insurance. She left me some in her will. I sent in her death certificate today along with all of the paperwork that the insurance company needed. My question is this...how long does it usually take to get a check issued? Has anyone else gone through this? The company that she had her insurance through was Chevron/Texaco. I apologize in advance if I have placed this in the wrong category.

Any and all answers are very much appreciated.

Thank you everyone.

I meant that she left me, my brother and my sister as beneficiaries on her life insurance. Not that she left us life insurance in her will. Sorry about the confusion.

My sympathies.. It sounds like a policy was through the corporation where she was employed, but underwritten by an insurance company. Call Chevron/Texaco Human Resources and ask for the name of the ins. company, an address, and a phone number (and a name to contact if possible).

As you can see from the other answers, the waiting time varies greatly. My mother received her check in about two weeks after she sent in the documents. He had a policy with an insurance company, not through his employer.

Good luck, and again, my sympathies

You might want to call and bug them about it if it has been a while.

IT can vary widely - but as long as there were no questions around the circumstances of her death, they don't have any reason to hold back.

Keep calling them until they send a check.

When my Dad passed it took six months. When my Mother in law passed it took one year. You should call the insurance co. and ask them what there time table is for payment. I hope this helps. Mell

It sounds like it was a group plan with her former employer Chevron. Most individual policies pay between 2 weeks and a year. That is a pretty big swing but I have seen it go either way many times.

Make sure you mailed in your death claim form, a copy of the death certificate and double check the address as to where you need to send it.

Get a contact name at the department that you are mailing it and follow up several times in the first few weeks. Make good notes to the date, time and who you talked to. If you do this generally you can get a check in a month or less.

Some carriers just won't pay fast so be patient and keep calling on it.

Good Luck

life insurance payments follow the directive of the policy not the will.

You should allow about two weeks, and the money will come in the form of three checks, one for each of you. If you need a little bit of assurance call the claims department in a few days and ask if they have received the paperwork, and very important, ask them if it is in good order, do they have what they need?

My sympathies on your loss. May time work it's gentle grace on your heart.

You can't leave someone life insurance in your will. Whomever she named as beneficiary on the POLICY, will be receiving a check in about 2-3 weeks, from the time the COMPANY gets the claim. You can't change the beneficiary clause via a will.

Chevron/Texaco would probably be her employer, NOT the insurance company. They're going to take the claim information, and forward it to the insurance company, so maybe another week on top of that.
