great_and_mighty_ada... | Looking for good disability provider in terms of not having to sue them to get a claim.? |
Okay, I want disability insurance. I realize the value.
However, I know that most DI providers will use underhanded tactics not to pay claims - losing paperwork, stating no longer disabled without evidence, stopping payments without explanation, etc... In the meantime, they hope the insured gives up or dies.
If I am disabled, I want an insurance company that I can trust not to add that additional burden, or if I am mentally disabled, my family. However, I don't know if there is such an insurer out there.
Are there ANY good Disability Insurers in terms of claims responsiveness? Is there any post-claim customer satisfaction rating, or any other independent gauge I can use, other than just trusting the selling agent?

Source:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2005/disability_insurance.html Additional Details Basically, my theory is that I pay a DI provider. In return, they promise to give me money if I am disabled. Since I have no intention of being disabled, this is likely to be a good deal for them.
However, if they have a history of reneging on that promise (as most do), their insurance is worthless to me regardless of how financially stable the company is. I don't know why anyone would buy insurance from a company that has a history of not paying. |

what on earth are you talking about? if you have medical insurance already, you're covered. |

Unfortunately insurance companies are not rated on number of claims disputed they are merely rated on financial strength. With that said, the stronger a company is financially the more likely they have the funds to pay claims going forward. I would also look for longevity.
Me personally I would look at Mutual of Omaha and Northwestern Mutual, or any other insurance company that has been in business over 100 years. I recently switched to a group DI plan offered from a PEO. If you are not familiar with a PEO and are lucky enough to own your own company, they are the way to go. I have some medical issues that made it very tough to get DI and those issues were waived on my DI which was the primary reason I wanted DI. By joining a PEO I gained access to a much larger pool of people (I think it was around 25,000 in their pool) and the PEO pools the risk. It allowed an individual like me to get quality group DI coverage from a reputable company without waiver. The PEO I chose was Advantec-HR because I was referred to a sales guy named Mike there that was very very familiar with DI insurance and how the system works. I am sure any reputable PEO would be good though just make sure the sales rep you work with has their insurance license, many do not from what I hear. |

I think that they all are the same, as they are not running their offices for charity. But you can do one thing to get rid of possible problems, you can follow Mahatma Gandhi, and sit for hunger strike in front of the office in a most peaceful manner without disturbing any one, holding plcards in your hands. |

Most reputable insurance carriers do not, "have a history of reneging on that promise (as most do.)" They are reputable for a reason, primarily because of a long track record of doing what they promise. As President Lincoln once said, "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." An insurance company with many decades of existence will have built a reputation, and as a consumer it is your job to find out what that is.
That being said, your first line of defense will be your local Department of Insurance. These state run agencies oversee all carriers doing business in the state that you reside. The agency also has complaint records on each company. Many state agencies have this information on their website.
Of course there are shady companies out there, as is the case with any other type of business. All in all, with a little homework, (as you are doing,) I'm sure you will find a policy that fits your needs, with a company that you can rely on. |

You're not going to find coverage, as far as I know, for "mentally disabled", outside of Social Security Disability.
For physical disabilities, READ BEFORE YOU BUY. You can buy an "own occupation" clause good for the first 2 - 3 years, after which, "any occupation" kicks in - meaning, if you can do ANY job, you're not disabled.
For the most part, REAL insurance companies don't act the way you describe. But when people try buying off the internet, and acting as their own agent, well, they cause the problems, because "their agent" doesn't know what they are doing. |
