MAJOR TIP:

If you are the victim of identity theft, DO NOT let the bank reimburse you for all your losses!!!!!

If someone uses your card at ten places, ask the bank to keep you at a loss for one dollar at each of the ten places.

Reason: Banks do not prosecute criminals who steal 'small' amounts of money.

Crooks know this.

Police are not even allowed to investigate an identity theft claim if you are no longer a victim. To be a victim, you must be at a financial loss. If the bank put all your money back into your account, then you have been 'made whole'. Since you are no longer at a financial loss, the police cannot investigate the crime.

Crooks know this, too.

The ADA (Assistant District Attorney) cannot prosecute a criminal if the victim does not file charges and appear. Banks are the only victims if they have returned all the money to your account.

In other words, ask the bank to keep you at a loss for one dollar for each use of the card. If the criminal is caught, they can then be punished.

Criminals really know this. They simply count on you to be a typical citizen.

Contact the three major credit bureaus and inform them so they will not issue any new credit and contact any open accounts close them and reopen new ones. This will give you a good place to start from.

Contact social security, contact the bank, then contact the 3 credit agenices and place a fraud block on you social, this prevents any new credit from being opened. Transunion, Experian, Equifax are the 3 credit agencies, they have a toll free number and you can do it over an automated system, no waiting. Sorry you lost your wallet, it is really terrible.

Good luck, hang in there!

First off, file a police report. You'll need this to get the DMV to issue you a duplicate driver's license. Additionally you may need to bring in your birth certificate to the DMV. Second, gather any credit card statements that you have and call them to cancel the cards. Contact social security so that they can issue you a new card and contact the credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, Transunion) and have them put a fraud alert on your credit report. This way you will be notified if anyone tries to use your social security number to apply for any credit. You may want to close your bank account as well and open a new one, just to be on the safe side. I had to go through all of this a few years ago when my purse was stolen. It was time consuming and annoying, but it had to be done.

Contact the 3 credit bureaus and have them put a fraud alert on your file. Now that someone has your social security number they will be able to make a fake id and start applying for credit in your name. You can also do a credit freeze - and I would really look at doing that. It costs 10 per credit agency. NO ONE - not even you - can apply for credit with the freeze. In order for you to apply for credit - you would have to have the freeze lifted.

You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each of the credit bureaus each year. You can go to www.annualcreditreport.com

I would also contact the Social Security Administration and let them know. You do not get assigned a new number but you can get a replacement card. The problem is not replacing the card - it's someone using your social security number and stealing your identity.

Also make sure you filed a police report. You will need that when who ever has your information starts applying for credit in your name.

Also alert your bank.
Alert any credit card companies for any cards in your wallet.

Good Luck.
