Low income health insurance?
One of my friends recently came to US from a different country. She sold whatever she had and came to US with 25000$. Recently since she was sick she had to go to emergency room for three days. The problem is she did not have any kind of health insurance. Somebody in the hospital told her that she might be eligible for special kind of low income insurance. Her salary is 900$ per month and she get some help from her brother to be able to pay for rent and living costs.
Here is my question: does having 25000$ in the bank account disqualify her for this low income insurance? Do they expect that she pay nearly all these 25000$ for the cost of her visit to emergency room?
She was asked to provide all the documents regarding her bank accounts, rent she pays and documents showing her income. She is living in Bay area.

Yes your income and money in the bank counts, that's why she was asked about these amounts, so they could check it out to see if she is low income.

You have to be an American citizen to get welfare health insurance - also known as Medicaid - but I'd bet she makes too much anyway.

Yes, the $25K in the bank would disqualify her, but so is not being a citizen.

anyone else would have to pay and you would have to have that insurance in place BEFORE you get sick and go to the hospital - getting it now won't pay the hospital bill

The Georgetown University Health Policy Institute publishes a guide to acquiring health insurance in every state.

Go to http://www.healthinsuranceinfo.net/ and click on California. I assume that is the area you are referring to in mentioning the Bay Area.

Each state has certain insurance plans for low income individuals and not being a citizen does not necessarily disqualify them. she may be able to obtain individual health insurance, the best bet is to talk to a broker that represents many companies. She can always purchase international medical insurance, try a google search for international medical group

By coming here from another country and with out a social security Number it will disqualify her (most likely!)
There is a discount medical plan she can get! (it doesn't require a social security number!) since it's not like regular insurance. it's only a plan that gives you great upfront discounts on all healthcare related costs!
AmeriPlan USA is the nations leading company with medical discount plans..
She can apply this this and get help with all her healthcare.
it's only $39.95 a month.. and would cover everyone at her permanent address.
e-mail me through the website if you would like more information about this!
Thanks!

Rick
Not sure, is depend on states rule, i think it might affect but mostly depend in your annual income; if she was smart.
