Mandatory insurance?!?
Here in Massachusetts EVERYONE has to have health insurance, and if you wanna drive you have to have car insurance. How can this be legal? How can the government force me into buying a product or service?! Whats next, are they going to make it mandatory for everyone to buy 7th generation ipods? This is ridiculous. What if i dont want insurance? What if i cant afford it? WTF?!! Is their any legal way around this? Or are they going arrest me if i dont get any insurance? Should i board up my windows and stock up on guns?
Additional Details
forget the car insurance. health insurance. MANDATORY HEALTH INSURANCE.
That you are FORCED to pay for with your hard earned money.

Well, enough people in MA were squawking about not having any health insurance in place, and not having help to cover their medical expenses. That's why it's now mandatory in MA - liberals really ARE socialists!! And socialism is .. . take from you according to what you have, and redistribute to those who don't want to get it for themselves. That's why you have to have it.

You could move to ANY other state, and not be required to carry health insurance. But if something happens and you're stuck with a $25,000 medical bill, then odds are, you'll turn into one of those people complaining about medical bills, and no coverage.

You have to buy insurance to protect the people you might run over, run into, or otherwise damage. The mandatory insurance does little to protect you.

By the way, if you think about it, the government intrudes into all sorts of things ... from forcing you to wear a seatbelt or motorcycle helmet, to forcing you to buy flood insurance if your house is in a hundred year flood plain.

If you do get caught without insurance you will likely face a much more expensive fine, and possibly a suspension of your license (the penalties vary from state to state).

Josh
Mandatory car insurance is to make sure you can fix someone else's vehicle or property if you damage it. Health insurance is so you can pay your medical bills. DUH. Anyway, if it's the law why does it even matter? You're not going to change their minds about it. Just do what the rest of us do when frustrated over something we don't agree with, climb down off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and GET OVER IT!

In Tennessee, all drivers must have proof of Auto insurance. It is more for your protection. I must have proof my renter's Insurance is current before they will renew my lease. This is for my protection as much as it is for the protection of the Property Management Company.

If you do not want Health Insurance, you will need to sign a waiver stating you do not want this insurance understanding if you should be hospitalized, you and you along will be responsible for the entire costs.

Trust me, you want the Health Insurance offered by your employer. I changed jobs in March of 2005. I chose the EPO health insurance offered by my employer.

The Second Week of December 2005, I was Hospitalized for four days and under went major surgery. Colon Resection, had all but seven feet of my large intestines removed as well as my appendix which was ready to rupture.

A small portion of my colon and large intestines were loaded with benign tumors.

The total Hospital Bill for four days and the six hours of surgery came to $33,000.00. My cost $100.00 Hospital Co-Pay.

Do you have this kind of money laying around?

My portion of my health insurance premium is $100.00 per month. $50.00 every two weeks. A Small price to pay for piece of mind.

Top Cat
it makes sense, if you do not have insurance then rates go up on those that do have it (to cover those that do not).Meaning that we have to work extra hours at work to cover the new prices.

Doc
Having given this due thought, here's what I've come up with thus far.
They say that driving is a privilege not a right. Not entirely true. Driving on government funded roads IS a privilege. If however, you drive solely on your property and never venture out into PUBLIC streets, you may be able to argue the point. It's your right. It IS your property -- so long as you keep up with the mandated annual taxes. I dunno, paying a tax yearly on something you've paid for seems perverse and unjust to me, but then, that's another matter.
On the issue of mandatory health insurance, unless the treatment facility is government funded I don't see how they can impose such a "law." Strikes me as being unconstitutional -- we're being forced to give up our right to choose. Funny, it's the democrats accusing the republicans of infringing upon civil rights, but this is only true in the case of the democrat sponsored bill requiring health insurance for all. Coffee, meet kettle.

hoppykit
Well the taxpayers are tired of using their hard earned money to cover your medical bills when you can't pay it. For example people having baby after baby all paid for by the state's taxpayers. Is that fair?

Mandatory insurance is what they call for your health and well being, I say what a crock of sh**.
If you can't afford it you are to go to them and tell them this is my income now shell out what i can't afford.
Oh and by the way shell out for your car and you house and soon to breathe the bull they will feed you.

I don't understand the health insurrence being mandatory. I guess since it is illegal to not treat anyone, then they require it so that the doctors don't go unpaid. I do agree with the car insurrence. At least having libility. If you cause an accident and do damage to the other person or their vehicle, and you can't afford to pay, why should they have to pay? If you can afford to take the risk of driving, you should be able to be responsible if anything should happen.

YOU BUY INSURANCE TO HANDLE THE RISK THAT YOU CANT AFFORD OTHERWISE. IF YOU CAN AFFORD THE RISK, DONT BUY THE INSURANCE. DONT YOU THINK THAT THE 2ND PARTY DESERVES THE COVERAGE IF YOU SHOULD HURT SOMEONE OR DO DAMAGE TO THEIR PROPERTY?

goodfella8243
Driving without auto insurance should be mandatory, that is normal. You are usually required to have full coverage on cars that are financed, but if you own the vehicle outright you are only required to have collision coverage. As far as health insurance it should not be required. If you don't want to be healthy it's your choice. The government has already decided to intrude upon rights enough as is. The seat belt laws are WAY out of line! It is against our rights to tell us we have to wear our seatbelts. We are only "endangering" our own lives. In my state we are required to wear our seatbelts in any vehicle no matter what, but motorcyclists are allowed to ride around with no helmets....it's a crock of chit.

Gabe
they will give you a ticket for not having it. If you have to have health insurance then the government will provide a lower cost option for low income residents, they will have to. On car insurance, yes you must, the key there is that if you were to hit someone then you would have to pay out of pocket, and that's worse. They force you into it b/c driving is a privilege not a right. Therefore if you want enjoy said privilege then you must fulfill the guidelines to participate, like buying a drivers license and registration.

scorch_22
Car insurance is reasonable, becuase a car is a want not a need, and you can get by without a car if you can't afford insurance, plus when you drive you are putting other people at risk. I do see your point though, and with health insurance I agree, by the time you pay for all the crap the government forces on you you don't have enough to eat... Great I paid my insurance, I can afford to go to the doctor and have them tell me I'm sick because I'm starving to death. Thank You mandatory insurance.

No need to stock up on guns just come over to Europe, and forget the "Land of the free" lol.

They can make it a law the same way as the hospital can't turn you away if your bleeding to death. Maybe if you could be left for dead, then insurance would not be required. The legal way around it is to move out of Massachusetts.
Are you really serious about comparing health insurance with an ipod. Grow up!!!

stephenweinstein
Liability insurance is mandatory for cars everywhere, and has been for many years. If you do not have it, you cannot renew your car registration and it is illegal to drive. Collision and comprehensive are optional if you do not owe money on the car.

Your comment about iPods is not a valid analogy. The government does not require you to obtain any particular company's brand of insurance.

I do not know how they plan to enforce the required health insurance. I think that they will use fines rather than arrests.

You have to have car insurance so i wont be *** out when you hit me!

cowboybabeeup
Where I live, you don't have to have heath insurance. In fact, many people can't afford it. That's a crime to me! You do have to have auto insurance if you want to drive and that's a crime to the authorities. The auto insurance is needed to protect you and everyone else. The health insurance is for you only. If you board up your windows and take up guns...well, I wouldn't be telling anybody about it...but you can do that as long as you don't hurt anybody! Are you in good hands? LOL!

AAAAAAhhh... you have discovered the unfairness of BIG BROTHER government, uh? Welcome to the real world.

I have been on a "personal" campaign to get RID of mandatory AUTO insurance entirely... but the powers of opposition... and the STUPIDITY of the opposition is almost insurmountable. I worked in insurance for years, my FATHER worked in insurance for years... I know the insurance game! My father always described it as a betting man's business.... You bet the premium that something is GOING to happen, and the company bets the premium that NOTHING WILL happen. Very simply put, uh?

The biggest objection I get from the wide-eyed idiots is, "WHAT IF someone hits you and they DON'T have INSURANCE???" I tell them, "That's what UN-Insured Motorists, and UNDER-insured motorists coverage is for!" We HAVE such coverage ALREADY! If you want to protect YOURSELF against others, then YOU PAY FOR IT!

Then, a LOT of people have the WRONG CONCEPT of what insurance is actually FOR... it is NOT to be used as some sort of "forced savings" account to be used for minor damage and repairs.... it is reserved for those times when the "BIG ONE" occurs, and the car is wrecked, the neighbor's car is torn up, your passenger broke their arm and leg... etc. etc. etc. If you wish to be covered for such incidences, then so be it... but if you declare bankruptcy because of it, then those are the risks you've decided to take if you don't have insurance.

There you have it... my personal crusade!!!

Now back to reality... if your state requires insurance, you MUST have insurance. If you cannot afford it, you must find the cheapest available for the LEAST amount of coverage you can legally get. If you have a financed vehicle, your lien holder will require at least "Comp/Collision" on the vehicle so they have their azzes covered.

Unless, of course, you can also afford the terribly high fines for not having insurance... and the possible revocation of your license for multiple offenses.

Sorry... hon... you don't have much choice in this matter. To change things now is almost like asking the government to get rid of the IRS... it's too much of a behemouth!
