That's correct. Every private maternity policy has a waiting period.
Your options are to wait to get pregnant, or save up and pay for the birth yourself. (Or find a different job that offers benefits, but it doesn't sound like you're interested in doing that.)
You could always start your private policy now rather than waiting until March. That way, you get a few months of the maternity waiting period out of the way now, so you don't have to wait the full year to start trying after you get married. Just another option to consider. |

Any insurance you get on your own will have pre-existing conditions clause or a wait period for maternity.
BUT,,,, when you work for a company, you are insured right away (larger companies). Get insurance through your job if they offer it (sounds like they don't). Or get it with your husband's work once you get married. The trick is to work for a good company.

The two options I see is:
1) Start putting money aside to cover the prenatal visits and birthing.
2) Wait to have the baby.
I know of no insurance policy that would cover a pregnancy that occurs within 6 or 12 months of the start date.
I suppose there is 3) get a credit card, and charge the medical bills, and start your new life in a bit of debt (and of course, pray the delivery is normal). |

That's right. Maternity coverage, on private policies, is a prepayment plan. That's because the only people who buy it, are the ones who want to use it.
That's called "adverse risk", and is priced accordingly, with waiting periods.
Your alternatives are to get a part time job at Walmart or so, with benefits, in addition to your full time job, or to pay out of pocket for the prenatal care and birth. Or, to wait another year to have that baby. |

You are losing coverage under a group plan (I'm assuming). What about COBRA? |

I have never heard of that. Are you getting insurance from your employer or your fiance's employer? Insurance sometimes won't cover pre-existing conditions, but I have never heard of a waiting period before covering pregnancy.
Check with the benefits department to confirm that. That seems odd.
