Maternity leave?
Hello

We have life and health insurance at my work. Life is free and we automatically receive it. Health is not free and optional to purchase. I did not purchase the health insurance. Not long from now I will be going on maternity leave and I was wondering if this will be covered by my life policy. Or does this fall under the health plan? Also is there a lenght of time you have to be with the company? I've worked here for 13 months now.
Hope someone can help. I didn't want to ask work because they might just say "no you will not be paid for your time off" and escepially if they think I don't know any better.

We do have short term disablity. Will I be covered if I didn't purchase the health plan?
I did receive a booklet when I was hired but I'm not sure what I did with it.
How does the short term disablity plan work and what steps do I need to take to get it started?

Most generally, life insurance only pays when you die. Your company's maternity leave is determined by your company; if you are a full time employee, it is covered by the same plan the company has for short or long term disability. At the very least, you should be able to use any accrued vacation and sick days for your "maternity" leave. Please, check with your HR department and don't wait until the day before delivery. If you have no paid time off for delivery and parenting time, you will need to plan very carefully for your budget and time to return to work.

Keep in mind that you want to leave them smiling, so they will be glad to have you back on the job after your child arrives. The more you do for them now, the more understanding they will be when you come back, and have issues with day care or being up all night with a colicky infant. If they are thoroughly not happy with you before your leave, you will have no wiggle room as a new mom when you come back.

Your LIFE policy only pays out if you DIE.

Many health insurance policies will cover your medical bills for delivery. But NEITHER will pay you lost wages while you're out on maternity leave. Effectively, you can take any unused vacation time, but you are NOT paid for your time off. It's not that you don't know any better, it's that employers don't pay for women to take three months off work every time they have a baby.

Do you have sort term disability ? cause that should cover your leave. An Most states require company's to give at least 4 weeks of Maternity leave (more if you have a c-section) , You really need to speak to your employer, to find out how long you need to be with your company for the leave to kick in.

When i had my 2nd baby , I was able to take off 2 months due to my C-section , But I have also been with my job over 6 years ..

here check out this link , it should help you a bit ..
it;s the U.S. Department of Labor about Leave.

You need to schedule time with your benefits manager to discuss what provisions are available to you. Your company may provide short term disability or you may have to elect the coverage - find out since that's your best option for getting paid leave for maternity. Your Life insurance only pays if you die - hope that doesn't happen. Your company may offer some type of paid leave, or you may be eligible for FMLA which is unpaid leave - but only if your employer has more than 50 employees in one location. Your benefits/HR dept should be happy to provide you with all the options and won't think you should know better - many employees don't understand their benefits. Good luck!

If the company does not offer paid leave, then they are required to allow you to take FMLA leave if they are large enough to be covered by FMLA. I think that the law is that you are allowed to continue insurance will on FMLA, but have to pay for it yourself; this should be easy enough to check.

I agree with the other posters re: life and health insurance.

Short term disability - depends on what the plan is or whether the "plan" is through the state in which you work. Contact HR and ask them for the proper forms to apply for short term disability. But remember that after so many weeks (again, depends on the policy), short term disability will be cut off (because after a period of time, it will be considered long term disability).

What state do you work in? For the employers I've worked with, they've paid into the state plan so if I were to make a claim, I'd have to file paperwork with the state.

Don't be afraid to ask your HR department - that's what they are there for.
