Medicaid application question- what to say on forms when you live with boyfriend but he doen't support you?
I'm a 28yo ft student that hasn't made a dime since Jan. I'm taking to way many credit hours to work. I got a little fin. aid and had to take out a student loan. I haven't even gotten the check yet, so I'm dead broke and in debt. It's not such a big deal, I've been broke before, I can do it again. The problem is, I need health and dental insurance. Every independent plan including student plans cost atleast $100 a month, I can't afford that. I've been told I would qualify for medicaid and it's free. But I know they will ask about who I live with and how much he makes. My boyfriend makes good money, but he doesn't support me. I haven't been paying rent but once I get that check he wants me to pay atleast a little. So, what do I say on the forms? If I say I do pay rent, will he have to mention that when he files his taxes? If I say I don't pay, will they he supports me and want to include his income? I truly am broke, can't work, am not being supported and need insurance. what do I say?

Just fill out the forms as if you're living by yourself.
Leave your boyfriend off the forms. Since you and your bf aren't married, you're considered two seperate households. Even though you both live together and especially, if he doesn't support you.
And he doesn't have to worry about the tax issue. You're helping pay the rent, not supplimenting his income. You can say you pay a small portion of the rent or not.

If you're really unsure, just call the SRS/Medicaid office and ask.

About 10 years ago, I was in a similar situation. My case worker suggested to fill it out this way, as I was the one taking care of myself and my son. Even though I was still living with my parents.

This is a grey area... Ask your caseworker exactly what to do, but what I would do is mention his income - since he does live in the house with you, but make note that he doesn't pay your bills at all. (if you can back it up with paperwork - like reciepts, tax returns, etc all the better) Otherwise, if you don't mention that he lives under the same roof that you do, and the state finds out, not only will they cut you off immediately, they might make you pay it back, and that's a big risk to take.

They count household income. If you're not going to lie, then you have to report him as being in the household, and his approximate income. It has nothing to do with whether or not he's supporting you (heck, if he was SUPPORTING you, he'd marry you.)

I didn't think medicaid did dental?

Medicaid doesn't cross check with the IRS, if that's what you're asking.

He's a roommate...not your husband. a boyfriend does not caount and I don't think he would have to report you paying some rent as income. Really, do roommates have to do that now? I could be wrong.

Unless you are disabled or pregnant you can not get medicaide. It is not allowed. And why would you keep a man around if he is unable to assist you financially. You can be miserable and broke by yourself. Also if you do not list him as an occupant of your household to obtain services like food stamps, you will be committing fraud and that can be very serious

You haven't made a dime all year. You live with your boyfriend without paying rent but he doesn't support you? Isn't providing a home part of support?

Tell the truth on the forms - you'll keep out of trouble that way.

Elo Fudpucker
I've got a brilliant suggestion, Tell them the truth just like you said in your question. If you qualify, Great, If you don't, you won't go to jail for lying on a government aid application..................Nuf Said

wow i saw a lot of false information in the other comments... first of all, i just went through the same situation... "household" is referring to people with shared income and expenses...even if you are living with someone else... renting out a room is the same as renting your own place. second thing id like to mention is you dont have to be pregnant or disabled... medicaid also supports low income parents and children the have other programs for students. and the comment about why are you with him if he doesnt support you... well i just feel sad for the person that thinks the only purpose of being in a relationship with someone is financial support.
